About Chris D’Elia

Chris D’Elia was born in New Jersey in 1980. His father was a famous TV director and producer named Bill D’Elia while his mother, Ellie D'Elia (née Dombroski), is an interior decorator. His brother, Matt D’Elia, is also in the entertainment business and is a filmmaker and actor.

Chris D’Elia and his family lived in New Jersey until he was 12 after which they decided to move to Los Angeles, California. It was once he moved to California that D’Elia really started to become interested in pursuing comedy.

Pursuing a Career in Comedy

When D'Elia started high school, he realized he had a passion for acting. He therefore took part in many productions during this time including a variety of guest starring bits on Chicago Hope.

After high school was over, Chris D’Elia applied to the New York University where he majored in acting. He didn’t stay in university long though, because he didn’t like the university experience. Soon after, D’Elia jumped straight into acting. He had a small part in a movie early on in his career which went straight to DVD.

He decided to focus most of his time, when he wasn’t busy acting, writing scripts for movies. He found that he enjoyed writing and had a talent for it. It was this realization that pushed him to take up stand-up comedy, where he’d be writing his own jokes. Stand-up comedy had always been D’Elia’s main passion, and acting had originally been a means to achieve a specific end. By the age of 25, D’Elia was on track to pursuing his dreams.

D’Elia’s Comedy Career Takes Flight

D’Elia began focusing all of his time and energy into his stand-up comedy career by the time 2006 had come around. He has been featured in a plethora of stand-up comedy tours and shows.

After doing extensive stand-up work at local clubs, D’Elia has been featured on Comedy Central Presents, Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham, and Showtime’s Live Nude Comedy. His time on each of these shows gave him massive exposure. Now, he was introduced to a much broader audience and was becoming a household name in comedy.

This was followed by him getting a part on the TBS TV series, Glory Daze. On the show, D’Elia played the role of William Stankowski, also known as ‘the Oracle’. He was then cast in the NBC comedy show, Whitney, alongside Whitney Cummings. In addition to these two shows, D’Elia was also a host on the Ten Minute Podcast.

If you were to ask Chris D’Elia what he does for a living, he’d tell you that he was a stand-up comedian who occasionally does acting.

More of D’Elia’s Achievements

In addition to all of his stand-up work and acting, D’Elia has also dabbled in music. He released a parody rap album in 2013 under the name MC ‘Chank Smith’. The album was called ‘Such is Life’ and was produced by Mr. Green. D’Elia has said that he plans to release more music in the coming years.

That same year, D’Elia did his first stand-up special on Comedy Central. The one hour long piece was called White Male Black Comic and was written by his father.

The following year, D’Elia was cast in the NBC show Undateable in the lead role. The show is based on the book Undateable: 311 Things Guys Do That Guarantee They Won't Be Dating or Having Sex by Ellen Rakieten and Anne Coyle. It features a live audience and often involves the actors doing improvisation. To promote the show, all of the actors, who happened to be stand-up comedians and good friends, went on a stand-up tour.
