Chris de Burgh’s Beginnings

Chris de Burgh’s birth name is Christopher John Davison and he was born in Argentina to British parents. His father was a diplomat and as he was stationed in different parts of the world, de Burgh was raised in Africa and Malta. When his father retired, the family settled down in Ireland. De Burgh’s father bought a twelfth-century castle, converted it into a hotel where de Burgh began performing for the guests. When he began performing, he adopted his mother’s name, “de Burgh”. This was the beginning of the voice behind The Lady in Red.

Performing regularly whenever he got the time, de Burgh continued his education and graduated from school and then attended Trinity College, Dublin. At Trinity, he graduated with a master’s degree in English, French and History.

Going Professional

In 1974, de Burgh signed a record deal with A&M Records, which released his debut album Far Beyond These Castle Walls the same year. While the album failed to impress his fans and the critics, one of its singles, Turning Round - which was released as Flying outside of the UK and Ireland - became a hit in Brazil. It stayed on top of the Brazilian charts for 17 weeks.

De Burgh’s subsequent work suffered the same fate. As they were generally ignored in the UK and US, they were commercial successes in Europe and South America.

Making it Big in the UK

In 1981, de Burgh released Best Moves. It was a collection of his hit songs from his previous albums. It reached No.65 on the UK Albums charts. In Germany and Norway however, the album reached the fifth and fourth spot respectively. This was the first time de Burgh’s album had charted in the UK.

In 1982, de Burgh released The Getaway. One of the singles from the album, Don’t Pay the Ferryman was a smash hit and helped the album to chart at 30 in the UK and at 43 in the US. This album was followed by the release of Man on the Line. This album performed better than all of its predecessors and reached the eleventh spot on the UK charts.

De Burgh’s Magnum Opus

The Lady in Red was released in 1986. While the single became a No.1 hit in the UK, its accompanying album, Into the Light reached No.2 spot in the UK.

The Lady in Red was written by de Burgh as well. His source of inspiration for this song was his wife, Diane. In his own words, he wrote the song in memory of when he first saw her.

The Lady in Red alone can be credited with making de Burgh famous all over the world.

Music after The Lady in Red

Flying Colours was released as a follow up to The Lady in Red. Released in 1988, the album reached the top spot in the UK. One of the singles from the album, Missing You became a smash hit both in the UK and Ireland.

After Flying Colours, de Burgh has released 13 studio albums. Out of these, Power of Ten, This Way Up, and Footsteps have done phenomenally well in the UK.
