Chicago the band was born in 1967 in Chicago, Illinois. The band was formed at DePaul University with a group of music students who played a series of club shows as a cover band called The Big Thing. The band was famous for their versatile and varied use of instruments. In 1968 the group moved to Los Angeles and signed with Columbia Records. They then changed their name to Chicago Transit Authority. The band released their first record, which was a double album with jazz, Latin, and experimental influences. "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?", "Beginnings", and "Questions 67 and 68" became the bands first popular hits and continue to be rock radio classics. The band was forced to shorten their name to simply Chicago after the actual Chicago Transit Authority threatened to sue.

Chicago released another double album entitled Chicago, which became the group's breakthrough album. The featured hit single was called "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon" , and it was a thirteen-minute suite composed by James Pankow . "Make Me Smile" and "Colour My World", both sung soulfully by Terry Kath, were two top ten hits featured on this album. Also popular were "25 Or 6 To 4″ and "It Better End Soon". Chicago's sound has evolved from politically charged and at times experimental, to softer and sweeter ballads. They were able to create music like no other band, producing more than two LP discs per year. Tragedy struck in 1978 with the death of then singer/guitarist/group founder Terry Kath died of an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound. This rattled the group and lead to changes in the original roster. Current members include Robert Lamm, James Pankow, Lee Loughnane, Walter Parazaider, Jason Scheff, Tris Imboden, Keith Howland, and Lou Pardini.

Despite the personnel changes over the years, the group is still active four decades after its founding. Chicago is one of the few rock groups to never have not broken up completely or even taken prolonged break.  In 2002 Chicago released a two-disc compilation with Rhino Records entitled The Very Best of Chicago: Only the Beginning which includes music from the band's entire career. The compilation made the Top 40 and sold over 2 million copies in the US. Chicago continues to release more tracks on their 2006 album Chicago XXX, which features newer songs such as "Feel" and "Caroline" and was produced by Rascall Flatts bassist jay DeMarcus.
