Founded during the year of 1967 in Chicago Illinois, the band launched its debut double album ‘The Chicago Transit Authority’ in 1969. The band was known by the name Chicago Transit Authority during early years of its formation, which was later reduced to ‘Chicago’ as a consequence of a lawsuit. Band’s first record was well received by the listeners and within a year’s time it sold more than a million records. The album was certified as Platinum and Chicago quickly emerged in the music scene of 1970. The greatest pop-rock hits form the album included ‘Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?’, ‘Beginnings’ and ‘Questions 67 and 68’ which beautifully amalgamated rock with funk, jazz and pop and demonstrated the band’s style.
Their second studio release ‘Chicago II’ came out in 1970 which featured brilliant vocals of Terry Kath and spawned two top ten hits namely ‘Make Me Smile’ and ‘Colour My World’ earning the band considerable fame. Maintaining such reputation, the band released a series of promising self titled albums with variations like ‘Chicago III, ‘Chicago IV’ and so on during the time period of 1971-1978. These albums produced a number of chart hits like ‘If You Leave Me Now’ which won the band their only Grammy and gave boost to the band’s image and status.
The band went through various structural changes after the accidental death of its band member and vocalist Terry Kath in 1978. The band found the replacement as Donnie Dacus during the release of their album ‘Hot Streets’ which paid off and the thrilling single ‘Alive Again’ pulled the band back to top fifteen on the charts. With this new addition, Chicago strived to take their music to untouched zenith of success and produced one album on average each year.
The band won an AMA Award for ‘Best Pop/Rock Group in 1986 marking seventeen years of their wonderful music career. The band also started to cover famous songs of various veteran artists like Sarah Vaughan and Duke Ellington which added to their music diversity and repertoire. Touring different locations worldwide and evolving their style, the band launched different variants of their famous self title series throughout 1990s.
Chicago was inducted to Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1992 due to their outstanding contribution to progressive and soft rock. The 21st century began with more advancement in the music history and so came the changes in Chicago. Band’s 19th studio album ‘Chicago XXX’ was released in 2006, and for the very first time Chicago’s music was made available to their fans in digital downloadable format.
Meanwhile, the band continued to perform in different shows and live concerts worldwide. Chicago also toured with the band ‘America’ and ‘Doobie Brothers’ in the years 2007 and 2010 respectively. With ongoing projects and music accomplishments, the band completed its 43 years of magnificent music career in 2010.
