During the 1950s, Ornette Coleman Quartet revolutionized jazz music, and enjoyed huge amount of success in that particular genre. As a bassist, Haden introduced a new style of playing bass back when he was with the Quartet. He played in a way that at times sounded like a solo on its own, while sometimes in magnificently complimented the other soloists. It was because of the bassists like Haden, how bassists started playing a vital role in group improvisation. Apart from playing with Billy Higgins, Don Cherry, Ed Blackwell, Ornette Coleman and Dewey Redman; Haden also collaborated with other jazz musicians like Chet Baker, John Coltrane, Joe Henderson and Alice Coltrane during 60s and 70s.

Later in 1986, he also formed Charlie Haden and Quartet West along with the fellow musicians Larance Marable, Ernie Watts and Alan Broadbent. Larance Marable was later replaced by Rodney Green on drums as Marable suffered from some illness. Haden also flaunted his understanding of classical chamber and jazz music when Gavyn Bryars wrote an adagio for Haden. The extended Adagio was titled By The Vaar and for its recording Haden was accompanied by percussion, bass clarinet and strings. The recording was featured on the album Farewell to Philosophy and it was recorded with the English Chamber Orchestra.
