The Early Days
Cardi B comes from The Bronx. She worked at a supermarket and then even became a stripper for a while to run away from domestic violence and poverty. Becoming a stripper was not a career choice however as she turned to the profession only to ease her financial and personal problems.
The year 2013 was the first time she began to get some publicity. She had uploaded a few video of hers on social media and she began to get noticed. Her Instagram page and Vine became the two platforms where she generated the biggest buzz.
The Music Career Begins
Card B’s debut in the music industry came in the year 2015 when she made an appearance on Boom Boom a single by Shaggy. Then in December of 2015, she appeared on her debut music video. She followed that up by coming out with her debut mixtape titled “Gangsta Bitch Music, Vol. 1.” on March 7, 2016. The record went on to peak at the thirtieth spot on the US R&B/ Hip-Hop and at the twentieth position on the US Rap Albums charts.
Cardi B released her second mixtape “Gangsta Bitch Music, Vol. 2.” in January of 2017 and then at the end of the next month, she signed a recording contract with Atlantic Records. She was making some noise by that point in her career and that brought along an opportunity to go on a tour with “The Lox” as an opening act. May of 2017 brought her way to BET Awards nominations in the categories “Best Female Hip-Hop Artist” and “Best New Artist.”
The Breakthrough Arrives
Cardi B came out with her debut single Bodak Yellow on June 16, 2017 through Atlantic Records. The single was made available through digital distribution and she then went on to perform the track on the July 18th episode of The Wendy Williams Show.
Bodak Yellow turned out to be a massive success story. The single received a lot of critical acclaim and was called the best song of 2017 by The Washington Post and Pitchfork. It also made it to the second spot on Billboard’s song of the year list.
It did exceptionally well on the commercial front too. Bodak Yellow went on to peak at the first spot on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. It also climbed to the top spot on the US Billboard Hot 100, thus making her the first female star since Lauryn Hill in 1998 to do that. On top of that, Cardi B also became the first artist with Dominican descent to go number one on the chart. It climbed to the eleventh spot in the UK, sixth position in Canada and to the fourteenth spot in Belgium.
Bodak Yellow sold more than a whopping four million copies in the US to earn four times platinum certification from the RIAA. It was certified triple platinum in Canada, silver in the UK and gold in both Australia and New Zealand. The song also brought Cardi B two Grammy nominations and went on to win a BET Hip Hop Award in the process.
Consolidating her Position
Cardi B wasn’t done just yet though. She then went on to work with Migos on the track Motorsport and with G-Eazy on the song No Limit. Both tracks cracked the Top 10 and in the process made Cardi B the first ever female hip hop star to have all of her first three singles reach the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. With these two tracks making to the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs charts too, Cardi B became the first female artist ever to see her first three songs crack the Top 10 of the chart.
She will now be supporting Bruno Mars on the last leg of his epic 24K Magic World Tour in 2018. This is her time to shine and she is making the most of it. Watch her live in concert when she tours with Mars by booking your Cardi B tickets because it promises to be one unforgettable ride.
