Capital Jazz Fest is a three day musical event that attracts thousands of jazz and soul enthusiasts of all ages every year. History of Capital Jazz Fest
Capital Jazz Fest was launched in 1993 at Bull Run Regional Park in Centreville. In 2004 it moved to Merriweather Post Pavilion as the festival attendance grew substantially. The three day festival attracts nearly twenty thousand attendees each day. The fest is organized and managed by Capital Jazz Radio, which also organizes an annual Capital Jazz Supercruise featuring jam sessions, dancing, theme parties, comedy, games and contests.
Into its twenty-fourth year, the festival has showcased some stellar artists in the past. The 2013 lineup included performers like David Sanborn and Bob James, Marcus Miller, Eric Benet, Gerald Albright and Norman Brown and a special appearance by Chaka Khan. Headlining the 2014 fest were Grammy Award winner John Legend, as well as Chaka Khan, Faith Evans, The O’Jays and Erykah Badu, among others.

Promoting itself as “The jazz festival with soul”, Capital Jazz Fest is more than just a series of concerts. It is an outdoor event, a place to mingle and make friends, eat, drink, relax and enjoy the music.
The largest music fest venue in Maryland, serves as the setting for the Capital Jazz Fest. Located between Baltimore and Washington, the Merriweather Post Pavilion is surrounded by forty acres of forest. It was once rated by Billboard Magazine as the second best amphitheater in the US. The venue also hosts the Virgin Mobile Free Fest and the Summer Spirit Festival. Over the years, the Merriweather Post Pavilion has featured some iconic performers like Led Zepellin, Jimi Hendrix, The Who and Janis Joplin.
The festival event showcases over thirty jazz and soul acts from around the nation on two big stages. On the Pavilion Stage contemporary jazz and adult contemporary artists showcase their talents while the Symphony Woods Stage features old school and newer soul artists.
Other activities fest-goers can enjoy
Besides soul and jazz music concerts, the festival also offers a range of other activities. At the Festival Marketplace, festival goers can browse through fine arts and crafts from multiple vendors. The food court offers a variety of culinary treats and attendees also get the chance to participate in artist workshops and meet and greet events.
Attendees can bring along CDs of their favorite artists to get signed at meet and greets or take pictures with them. Fest-goers also have the opportunity to chill out at the late night after parties that take place after the concerts end. The late night events take place at the festival’s host hotel, which will be the Marriot BWI Airport Hotel for 2015.
