Singer, songwriter, music producer and composer, Sesto’s music usually falls in the Latin ballad, Latin pop and Synthpop genre. Sesto was musically active from 1964 till 2002. Early in his Career
Camilo Sesto started his musical career with a band Los Dayson. The year was 1965, when Los Dayson travelled to Madrid to appear on TVE’s Salto a la Fama. Only a year later, Sesto joined another band Los Botines and he made his first appearance on film in El flautista de Hamelin. 1970 was essentially the year when Sesto’s career took off. His first step was to embark upon a solo career. His second step was to become his own producer. This gave Sesto the freedom to create and produce his own music and start his career as a music producer for other artists as well. The year 1970 also brought him his first award, the Revelacion price at the Oles de la Cancion festival.
The year 1971 saw Sesto perform his first number one record Algo de Mi on the Spanish TV program Buenas Noches. The record reached the number one spot in Spain and in many Spanish speaking countries. The record stayed on top for a whole year in many Latin American countries. This essentially launched Camilo Sesto’s career and since then he has 52 number one hits to his name. He also has 18 top 40 list songs and his albums have resulted in 175 million sales worldwide. With most of his work in Castillian Spanish, Sesto is a multi linguist who has also released songs in Valencian, Italian, Catalonian, English, German and Portuguese. Camilo Sesto has stated that as far as musical influences are concerned, The Beatles, especially Paul McCartney, influenced him the most as an English speaking act.
Collaborations & Awards
Throughout his fifty year musical career, Camilo Sesto has collaborated with a number of artists. These include Miguel Bose, Lucia Mendez, Charytin Goyco, Jose Jose and Angela Carrasco. In addition to being a composer, he has also written songs for these artists. He has also produced and translated lyrics of an Australian band, Air Supply, to Spanish. In 2011, Camilo Sesto was given the Highest Hispanic Pride medal in Las Vegas. Collaborations and accolades aside, Camilo Sesto is one of the few Spanish artists who have performed at the Madison Square Garden and BBC London.
2017 & Beyond
In September 2016, Sesto announced a new compilation album called Camilo 70. To mark his 70th birthday and 50 years in the music business, Sesto released 60 songs in the album, which included previous hits, unpublished tracks and live recordings. The album will also include a bonus song Our Father with Pope Francisco which will be released later in 2017. The proceeds from the song will go to different charitable causes. Sesto recorded his part of the song in June 2016 in Madrid and Pope Francis recorded his part in Rome. Many fans of Camilo Sesto are excited about the release of the song. Albano Carrisoi has sung the Italian version of the song. Previously, Camilo Sesto has toured Mexico, United States, Columbia, Argentina and Spain. Currently he will be touring the United States and performing at selected venues in various cities.
A remarkable artist, Sesto in his 50 year career has worked on many successful projects. One project that stands out is the finance, production and adaptation of the highly successful musical Jesus Christ Superstar in Spanish. He has also acted playing a part in the Spanish filming of Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
On Friday June 2, Camilo Sesto will be performing at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California. And on Sunday June 4, he will be performing at the James L Knight Center in Miami, Florida.
