Calypso Rose was born as McArtha Lewis in a small town named Bethel, located in West Indies. Rose inherited interest in music from her grandparents, who were both involved in the music scene. She started singing and writing songs during her teens and released 20 music albums during her career. Within a few years, she became one of the most recognized Calypso singers in multiple countries. These include the Humming Bird Medal Award which is given ‘to loyal and devoted service beneficial to the state in any field, or acts of gallantry’. Throughout the eighties and nineties, she was honored with dozens of awards and medals one after another. Rose is known as an ambassador of the Calypso and Trinidad & Tobago music as she gets the credit for introducing this genre all over the world.

Although she has permanently moved to Jamaica but she visits Trinidad every year during the carnival season. In the year 2011, a documentary film 'Calypso Rose: The Lioness of the Jungle' was released. The film is directed by Pascale Obolo and covers the life story of Calypso Rose. It also includes a few of her interviews, her concert videos and other highlights.
