Caifanes was founded by a group of musician friends in the very famous town of Mexico City in 1987. Over the years the band has not undergone any major lineup changes. Caifanes consisted of Diego Herrera on percussions and keyboards, Alfonso Andre on drums, Alejandro Marcovich on lead guitar, Sabo Romo on bass guitar and Saul Hernandez on guitar as well as lead vocals. Initially the members joined hands as an underground side project by the name of Insolitas performed as most of them were already playing different bands. While Insolitas performed at various local clubs and joints of Mexico City like El Jabali and High Tower its popularity started to increase and the band also released a live demo in the year 1986. The very next year all the members of Insolitas decided to pursue their music more seriously as a band and this was actually the formation of Caifanes. Caifanes is primarily a combination of two Mexican words namely Cai fan which actually means cool dude. The band’s major influence has been the acclaimed heavy metal and experimental rock from Britain namely King Crimson. Caifanes mainly focuses on genres like gothic rock, Spanish rock and progressive. Caifanes has been associated with major labels like Sony Music, BMG Records and RCA Records. Caifanes was mainly active from the year 1987 till 1995 and during this period the band released four studio albums namely Caifanes (1988), El Diablito Volume 2 (1990), El Silencio (1992) and El Nervio Del Volcan (1994). The band also released two compilation albums La Historia (1997) and Essential Caifanes (2009). One live MTV unplugged album was also released in the year 1994 that was named Caifanes MTV Unplugged. In the year 1995, Caifanes was disbanded mainly due to differences between band members and the last live show was played San Luis Potosi. In the year 2010 on Twitter the band members announced that they are looking forward to the band's eunion and the band played at Coachella and Vive Latino festivals in 2011. Since then Caifanes has started doing gigs and also working on a new album. During the performance years Caifanes has been playing music with known musicians like bassists Stuart Hamm, Federico Fong and Chucho Merchan, guitarists Adrian Belew, Jose Manuel and Gustavo Cerati, Yann Zaragoz on Keyboards and Leo on Percussions. Many of other Mexican musicians and bands have also taken influence from Caifanes such as Mana, Santa Sabina, La Cuca, Sekta Core, Bon y Los, Los Amantes de Lola and Botellita de Jerez. During the mid 90’s Mana and Caifanes were amongst the most popular bands in Mexico and most of their shows were sold out in advance.
