After recruiting Alfredo’s brother, Enrique to the group, they started to jam together in the garage and soon went on to perform gigs around their native country of Mexico. While they were playing one of their shows, they caught the attention of the Academy Award winning Argentine producer, Gustavo Santaolalla who helped the band get signed by Warner Music Latina.
Café Tacvba later hit the studio to record their first self-titled album. The record came out in 1992 and it instantly made them into superstars in Mexico. It was supported by five singles out of which, Maria got nominated for a Lo Nuestro Award in the category of, the‘Video of the Year.’
A couple of years later, all four members of the band joined forces with Gustavo Santaolalla and released their follow-up record, ‘Re’ in 1994. It featured a fusion of Latin American style with metal, punk and alternative rock which allowed them to build a fan following outside of the Spanish speaking part of the world. The album was labeled, “The equivalent of The Beatles White Album for the rock en español movement” by The New York Times and received five stars out of five from AllMusic.
