With a career spanning nearly half a century, Buddy Guy's is the definitive sound of Blues. He earned the National Medal of Arts, awarded for "extraordinary contributions to the creation, growth and support of the arts in the United States." Winning five Grammy Awards for both the electric and the acoustic guitar and having made innovations in the arena of traditional as well as contemporary blues music, Buddy Guy has inscribed his name permanently in the history of the genre. Buddy Guy is the recipient of a whopping twenty-three W.C. Handy Awards. Billboard Magazine presented him their "Century Award" for "distinguished artistic achievement." Buddy Guy has also served on the nominating committee for the Hall of Fame.
Originally from Louisiana, Buddy Guy was named George Guy at birth. Guy is a singer and songwriter who performs vocal renditions to Chicago Blues and Electric Blues, but his primary arena of fame is as a Blues guitarist. Rolling Stone magazine ranked him thirtieth on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Buddy Guy performs with gusto and is admired for his showmanship. He is seen using drumsticks to play the guitar and he often gets intensely absorbed in his virtuoso performances. He likes to draw the audience in by walking into the hall while playing his solos.
Buddy Guy's brilliance as a musician is summed up quite well by Jon Pareles, pop music critic for the New York Times, who wrote in his 2004 review: "Mr. Guy, 68, mingles anarchy, virtuosity, deep blues and hammy shtick in ways that keep all eyes on him...(Guy) loves extremes: sudden drops from loud to soft, or a sweet, sustained guitar solo followed by a jolt of speed, or a high, imploring vocal cut off with a rasp...Whether he's singing with gentle menace or bending new curves into a blue note, he is a master of tension and release, and his every wayward impulse was riveting." His latest album (2009) is called The Definitive Buddy Guy recorded by Shout! Factory.
