The elements of contemporary music are also incorporated within the compositions and presentations, especially to bring energy into classical pieces and modernize them for the younger crowd. Brooklyn Youth Chorus was formed in 1992 by Dianne Berkun in order to serve the community, and so far has done a great job. Initially it began as an ensemble but over the years has turned into a whole institution of music. The events are held in some of the most prestigious arenas such as Carnegie Hall, Brooklyn Academy of Music and Lincoln Center. In Madison Square Garden, 2007, BYC celebrated Elton John’s 60th birthday. Apart from that the company has celebrated birthdays of other legends as well, two recent names being Lou Reed and Andrea Bocelli.
Brooklyn Youth Chorus started off with forty five students who used to rehearse in Downtown Brooklyn in a donated space. Today the company has around 400 students enrolled in a number of different musical courses. The building at Cobble Hill has also been renovated and a number of facilities have now been added. Under the artistic directorship of Berkun, the company has grown a lot in a very short period of time and continues to thrive. Each season provides something new and better to the audience.
Dianne Berkun, the founder of Brooklyn Youth Chorus has been a music enthusiast since her childhood. While is school she was a part of the choir herself. She had a theory that children who love music would love to be a part of a choir and it would be easier to train them like that. She started working as Music Director at Brooklyn Friends School until she launched her own idea through BYC. She has brought the orchestra to a level today that it features some of the legendary artists as well as collaborates with several famous orchestras. For her contributions in the field, Berkun has been honored with several recognitions such as "Woman of Distinction" by YWCA and "Lifetime Struggle and Achivement Award" that was given to her by Major R. Owens.
Brooklyn Youth Orchestra has collaborated with names such as Barbra Streisand, John Legend, Ray Davis and Judy Collins. The orchestra has also recorded with Talib Kweli, Grizzly Bear, Laurie Berkner and Holy Ghost. The company was awarded "Best Classical Album" Grammy Award in 2005 for the album "On the Transmigration Souls" composed by Adams. The choir also performed in Pulitzer Prize ceremony in 2002 with New York Philharmonic and Lorin Maazel. The next year the company also performed with the famous Los Angeles Philharmonic at El Nino’s premiere arranged by Adams as well. The performance went on under Esa-Pekka Salonen.
Brooklyn Youth Orchestra also commissions the most famous arrangers and composers to create new choral music of different genres. Some of the famous names that have worked in the company in the past include Paul Moravec, David Lang, Andrew Lippa, Phil Kline, Missy Mazzoli, Daniel Brewbaker, Bryce Dessner and James McMillan. The company’s choir is famous for its distinctive blue uniform that is always worn during the performances. The orchestra also offers several scholarship programs for the deserving and talented students.
