Grupo Bronco most commonly known as Bronco is a music band that was formed in Apodaca, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. It was formed as a local group but has since gone on to be a sensational hit overseas. Bronco was, indeed, one of the first groups that helped to attract the urban and a much wider fan base for Norteno. They modernized the genre by incorporating modern instruments like keyboards in the composition of the music. That gave it a more modern pop feel and made it more melodious for the masses. Ramiro Delgado, Jose Luis “Choche” Villareal, Javier Villareal and Jose Guadalupe Espraza are the members who form “Bronco”.
Bronco took on the famous Norteno style of the 80’s and 90’s and modernized it. Norteno was primarily played on two Mexican instruments “Bajo Sexton” and “Accordion” and the genre has become very popular in the US as well. Norteno had a mostly rural following when it started but as the exposure grew so did its fans in the urban areas.
The band first shot to fame when their song “Que no Quede Huella”, which meant “May no Traces be Left” in English, became an international hit. The song was from their 1989 album “A Todo Galope” and the success of “Que no Quede Huella” enabled Bronco to tour various countries like Peru, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, United States and their own country Mexico. Their second major success came in 1993 when they acted in the soap opera “Dos Mujeres, un Camino” (Two Women, One Road) with performers like Bibi Gaytan, Erik Estrada, Lorena Herrera, Laura Leon and Selena Quintanilla. The opera was produced by the biggest Latin American media company “Televisa”. The band not only acted in it but also performed the shows self titled opening song. Their next album contained the song Dos Mujeres, un Camino and that album turned out to be one of their most successful ever by getting platinum and gold certificates in Mexico, Argentina, Paraguay, Chile and Bolivia. This album, along with all other albums by Bronco has been very big hits in the US as well.
Yes, Bronco has been successful but like all other success stories during the course of history they have had to deal with tough times too. Their biggest problem came when Espraza quit the band to go solo in 1997. That was a huge blow and Bronco was disbanded for six years till 2003 when they announced they would be making a comeback. They tried to use their old name in Mexico but were not allowed to do so because of a copyright issue with their former manager. They started to perform by the name of El Gigante de America in Mexico only and used Bronco when they went overseas because Mexico copyrights laws were not applicable beyond the country’s borders.
Bronco is a real life success story and an inspiration for all of us. It started as a local band, took up a local genre and turned it into a world wide phenomenon that went on to sell over ten million copies.
