Hailing from Los Angeles, California, the band was founded in 2009 by two musician friends namely James Mercer and Brian Burton. Brian is a famous name in the music industry and he is popularly known as Danger Mouse. Brian is a record producer and musician. He can fluently play instrument like bass guitar, drums, keyboards and bass guitar. James, apart from Broken Bells, is also the guitarist and lead singer for the popular indie rock group The Shins which is based in Portland, Oregon. Broken Bells write and record music as a duo but while touring Brian and James are accompanied by four other artists namely singer and lyricist Dan Elkan and Jonathan Hischke from the progressive rock group Hella and singer Nike Freitas and Nate Walcott from Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band. Broken Bells has collaborated with other groups and bands like Danger Doom, Gnarls Barkley, The Shins and Flake Music. Broken Bells, since its debut, is under an exclusive recording contract with Columbia Records.
Burton and Mercer started working together in 2008 but it was not until 2010 that they were able to release a self-titled debut album. This album received positive reviews from the critics as well as fans. It went on to chart in various countries and went gold in Canada. This album landed at number 7 on the US Billboard, number 2 on the US Alternative, number 20 on Australian charts, number 15 on Canadian charts and number 14 on Danish charts. After the Disco is the second studio album by Broken Bells that is all set to be released soon. It mainly focuses on genres like alternative rock, indie rock and space rock.
