Born in Illinois as George Robert Bob, he is from a German Irish descent. In 1952, he graduated from the Loyola University with a Business Management degree. Soon after graduation, he became a victim of the Korean War, however he was respectfully discharged by the US Army in 1954. Prior to his comedy career, Bob had switched various jobs from a typewriter to an office boy and then a delivery man. He didn’t like any of the jobs he had been involved in. By the end of fifties, he started working with the TV film producer Fred A. Niles. During his free time, Bob would record monologues along with one of his colleagues and they would send it to radio. Through this medium, Bob grabbed the attention of the officials at Warner Bros Records, who signed a contract with him the very next year. Bob chose his stage name himself and started to perform stand-up comedy at the local clubs. His hidden talent was unveiled to larger audience and Bob Newhart emerged as the Best New Artist after releasing his initial albums.
