Born in Illinois as George Robert Bob, he is from a German Irish descent. In 1952, he graduated from the Loyola University with a Business Management degree. Soon after graduation, he became a victim of the Korean War, however he was respectfully discharged by the US Army in 1954. Prior to his comedy career, Bob had switched various jobs from a typewriter to an office boy and then a delivery man. He didn’t like any of the jobs he had been involved in. By the end of fifties, he started working with the TV film producer Fred A. Niles. During his free time, Bob would record monologues along with one of his colleagues and they would send it to radio. Through this medium, Bob grabbed the attention of the officials at Warner Bros Records, who signed a contract with him the very next year. Bob chose his stage name himself and started to perform stand-up comedy at the local clubs. His hidden talent was unveiled to larger audience and Bob Newhart emerged as the Best New Artist after releasing his initial albums.
One of the 100 Greatest Stand-Ups of All Time, Bob Newhart has established a distinct style of speaking, which includes stammering. He is a huge fan of boxing and loves to watch other sports as well. According to Bob, Fred Allen, Jack Benny and Robert Benchley were his idols during early years. He used to watch ‘The Milton Berle Show’ and ‘I Love Lucy’ regularly. During the early seventies, Newhart was exposed to worldwide audience with his most popular TV series named as ‘The Bob Newhart Show’. His role as Dr. Robert Bob in this hit series made him a popular actor. Gradually he started to make appearances on other TV shows as well- he hosted more than 85 episodes of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson; appeared dozens of times on The Dean Martin Comedy Hour and The Ed Sullivan Show.
Newhart hosted his self titled shows during the eighties and nineties, named as ‘Newhart’, ‘Bob’ and ‘George and Leo’. Even after completing 45 years of his prolific career, Bob competes with today’s top notch comedians; he earned the most recent Grammy nomination in 2007 for the Best Spoken Word Album ‘I Shouldn’t Even Be Doing This!’. The Hollywood Walk of Famer, Newhart has acted in various hit movies. His most recent films include the 2011 films ‘Horrible Bosses’, and ‘Happy Feet 2’.
