Bob was somewhat of a child prodigy and started playing the piano at the age of 4. His first professional job came four years later when he played for a tap dance class. In 1957 after several job involving playing piano at resorts and clubs, Bob decided to pursue a bachelors and later masters degree in music. It was not until 1963, when the jazz artist got his big break as he was discovered by the legendary American records producer, Quincy Jones. Bob went on to record his debut solo album titled, "Bold conceptions" which was released under the Mercury Records Label. The artist released a total of 36 solo albums over a span of four decades.
Apart from these albums Bob also started working with the eminent jazz artist, Earl Klugh and released the album, "One On One" in 1979. This studio album earned both the artists a Grammy and topped the Jazz Albums Billboard charts. Bob worked with several artists and has produced a total of 11 collaborations albums to date. Another one of his collaborations with David Sanbon earned the duo another Grammy Award for the hit 1986 album, "Double Vision".
In 1990 while working on his solo album, "Grand Piano Canyon" Bob reunited with his old-time friend and drummer, Harvey Mason Jr. This was the origin of the band, Fourplay. The ensemble came out with their first album in 1991 which was produced by the Warner Bros. Label. The album proved to be an instant success and sold over a million copies. Fourplay has remained quite successful and has thirteen albums to its name. A professional and personal highlight for Bob was when he wrote songs alongside his daughter, Hilary and both of them toured many U.S cities with their album, "Flesh and Blood". Alongside working with his band and creating collaborations, Bob recorded a trio album in 2003 which debuted in front of a very eager audience at a Jazz Club in London. The album "Take It From the Top" was later released in Canada, US and Japan.
Apart from being a celebrated Jazz musician, Bob’s music has also been sampled at many occasions by numerous hip hop artists. His singles, "Take me to Mardi Gras" and "Nautilus" are among the most covered songs in hip hop history. Bob James was most recently awarded the George Benson Lifetime Achievement Award at the Smooth Jazz Award ceremony which was held in Canada.
