Many of the modern successful blues bands have been lead by harmonica. Absolutely no one carries the spirit of this sub-genre like Mark Hummel. As the leader of the Blues Survivors, he has played a pivotal role in the definition and popularization of harmonica dominated blues music. The music is fresh and progressive as it brings in many influences like rock n roll and modern RnB into it. However, it still draws inspiration from the more classical Chicago school of blues. Though he grew up in Southern California, as a young man Mark, was inspired by the Chicago based players like James Cotton and Little Walter. Once he moved to the San Francisco bay area in 1972, he started playing with local blues outfits like Mississippi Johnny Waters, Cool Papa and Sonny Lane. By the start of the decade he combined them all into the powerful outfit, Mark Hummel and the Blues Survivors Band.
Mark Hummel and the Blues Survivors Band released their first major commercially successful album Playing in your town in 1985. They followed it up with a world tour that took them all over North America and Europe. In 1998 Mark Hummel released an excellent album Up & Jumpin in collaboration with the piano legend Charles Brown and the Canadian guitarist/vocalist Sue Foley. The releases Hard Lovin (1992), Fiil Like Rockin (1994) and Married to the Blues (1995) hit stands. They further strengthened Mark’s position as a genuine modern blues great. All through those years, Mark and the Blues Survivors continued touring around the world, with the Blues Harmonica Blowout tour becoming the centerpiece of the group’s profile.
The Blues Harmonica Blowout has grown over the decades from where it started. Now it attracts some of the biggest and most critically acclaimed blues artists around the world. Of course, Mark and his critically acclaimed group Survivors have been with the blowout event since its very start.
