Born in 1961 in New Orleans, Wynton Marsalis showed interest in music as a child and soon discovered love for singing. Following his dream to contribute to the American culture, the gifted boy performed with a band led by Danny Barker. Getting introduced to the live music, he continued to refine his skills and after a few years he was seen performing with the New Orleans Philharmonic. He became popular in his high school due to his talents. He would often collaborate with several local bands for live shows, including funk and jazz bands as well as orchestras. When he turned 17, Wynton became the youngest ever musician to become a part of the Tanglewood’s Berkshire Music Center. Apart from his music commitments, Wynton was also a brilliant student who was honored with Harvey Shapiro Award in appreciation of his academic record.
In 1979, Wynton shifted to the New York City and soon he started to perform gigs at local bars. A year later he decided to quit other activities to study under the known drummer Art Blakey. His music education under Blakey explored the star inside Wynton. His music began to show perfection and intensity and the skill that he acquired from constant learning. He was featured with several jazz legends like Tony Williams, Ron Carter, Sweets Edison, Clark Terry and Sarah Vaughan among others. The year 1981 brought into picture new beginnings for the super talented Wynton Marsalis when he formed his own band. Ever since the inception of this band, his viewership has not decreased. For more than fifteen consecutive years, the band performed more than 100 concerts per year. They promoted jazz music throughout the world and Wynton’s infectious sounds created an endless fan following. Some of the most distinguished jazz stars of today including Christian McBride, James Carter, Eric Lewis and Nicholas Payton have polished their skills under the guidance of Marsalis.
Wynton Marsalis produced ‘Blood on The Fields’ during the peak era of his career. It tells the story of Leona and Jesse, two American slaves, and features their lifelong struggles towards freedom. It also gives a message at the end that the freedom and power must be shared. Jesse who was an arrogant Prince spurned Leona and then tried escape. The lyrics of this wonderful album feature the American Slavery and have widely captured the attention of listeners.
