Formed in 2005, the indie folk band was initially founded by Ryan and Israel. They released their debut album "3 Rounds and a Sound" in July 2008. The album instantly garnered rave reviews, charting on the Billboard Top Digital Albums chart at number thirteen. The forty minutes album comprised of songs such as "Things I Cannot Recall", "Two Towns from Me", "One Red Thread", "Paint or Pollen" and "The Story I Heard". The album also produced the single "Go On Say It" that became a hit on Apple's iTunes Store. "Go On Say It" produced two million downloads on the iTunes, becoming "Single of The Week". Soon after the release, the Pilots embarked on an innovative "Bi-Cycle Tour" that saw them perform in mainstream halls as well as small town venues. Ryan and Israel fashioned a custom bicycle trailer on which they cycled throughout the west coast, making stops at Santa Cruz, Arcata, Coos Bay, Eugene, Corvallis, Portland, Olympia, Seattle and Port Townsend. The following year they added four new members to the lineup and started another tour around the country, headlining in various clubs and venues. They also filled slots for other artists such as "Gomes" and "Langhorne Slim". During the same year, the Pilots wooed the audiences in Europe when they opened for popular bands such as "Hold Steady" and the "Counting Crows". They continued touring around North America, sharing the stage with bands such as "My Morning Jacket" and the "Decembrists".
In December 2009, the Pilots released their live EP that was only made available on the iTunes. The EP featured remixed version of their previous hits as well as a new song "Get It Out". The album also contained a cover version of the song "Look At Miss Ohio", originally released by "Gillian Welch". In September 2011, the Pilots released their much awaited sophomore album "We Are The Tide". The album was again a hit amongst the fans, containing songs such as "New York", "Just One", "White Apple", "I Know", "Keep Your Right" and "Always". The Pilot's debut album "3 Rounds and a Sound" has managed to sell over fifty thousand copies since its release. Apart from their regular tours, the American band has also performed at prestigious music festivals including the 'Outside Land Music and Arts Festival', the 'Lollapalooza Music Festival' and the 'Sasquatch Music Festival'.
