Rapper from Down South
Blackbear is a Floridian, born in Daytona Beach and raised in Palm Coast. From an early age, it was clear that he was going to become a musician. Initially, he was into rock music and performed with different garage bands. Busy performing as a teenager, Blackbear earned his GED while on tour. In 2008, he caught Tabari Francis’s eye, who was a talent manager. He put Blackbear in contact with Mister, who ran Compound Entertainment, an artist incubator started by Ne-Yo. To polish his musical skills and become a professional, Blackbear at the age of 18 moved to Atlanta, where songwriters Ne-Yo, Maejor and Sam Hook took him under their wing. He spent two years improving his writing and singing skills. At the young age of 20, after having re-invented himself as a rapper, Blackbear made the big move of shifting to Los Angeles.
Blackbear on the loose in LA
Blackbear initially got work as a songwriter and his big break as a lyricist came when he co-wrote Boyfriend with Mike Posner. However, a kid who had always wanted to be a rock star, Blackbear’s main focus changed to becoming a rapper and R&B singer. So, he released his debut EP Foreplay and a mixtape Sex in 2012. On Sex he collaborated with Posner, Maejor Ali and James Blake. Encouraged by the response, Blackbear released another EP The Afterglow in 2014. This was also the year when for the first time Blackbear, an independent artist, made money off SoundCloud.
In 2015, Blackbear released his debut album Deadroses. A self-released album, Deadroses was an instant hit, with one of its singles idfc charting on Billboard’s R&B Hot 100 and staying there for over a year. Moreover, the single was streamed over 22 million times on SoundCloud. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to state that this one song pushed Blackbear into the mainstream. However, it would be wrong to imply that Blackbear is a one-hit wonder.
Another single from the album titled 90210 has been streamed more than 11 million times on SoundCloud. Dirty Laundry and 4u also did extremely well on SoundCloud and Spotify. All in all, anyone interested in the marriage of different genres such as R&B, hip hop and punk-rock, Blackbear tickets is what they need.
Blackbear’s second album Help was also released in 2015. Although not as big of a success as Deadroses, it still did reasonably well. One of the singles Different Hos has appeared on Kylie Jenner’s Snapchat. Another single Slide Thru became a sensation on social media.
Blackbear’s third and fourth albums, Mansionz and Digital Druglord were released in 2017. Mansionz is actually the result of a joint collaboration between Blackbear and Mike Posner. The hip hop duo released this album under Island Records. One of the singles from the album is titled Dennis Rodman featuring Dennis Rodman.
In addition to his solo work, Blackbear has collaborated extensively with other artists on a variety of projects. Most recently, Linkin Park has recruited Blackbear for the production of their upcoming album One More Light. The album will be released soon, and provides a great opportunity for Blackbear’s fans to take a sneak peek into his latest work.
However, the best way to sample Blackbear’s music is to be at his concert. With his two latest albums, already in the music stores, Blackbear will be performing to promote them. With Blackbear tickets in hand, you, too, can listen to this promising young artist.
Blackbear breaks through the Hot 100 charts with the new single “do re mi” that also features Gucci Mane. A music video was also released recently that can take it up higher on the ranking.
