Bjork was born and raised in Reykjavik, Iceland. She was one of the founding members of the Icelandic rock band “The Sugarcubes”. Their first English single was “Birthday” and it was termed the best single of the week by the British weekly rock newspaper Melody Maker. Bjork soon started her solo career when the band separated in 1993 and was an instant hit. Apart from her singing, Bjork has several other trademarks such as her quirky fashion sense, her hair and her Icelandic accent.
Bjork has so far released around thirty singles that have made their way into the top forty songs list of most music charts across the globe. Some of her famous songs include “It’s Oh So Quiet”, “Army of Me”, “Big Time Sensuality” and “Earth Intruders”. Her songs “Hyperballad”, “Big Time Sensuality”, and “I Miss You” where ranked at the top of the Dance Hits chart in America. As of 2011, more than twenty million copies of Bjork’s albums have been sold around the world with “Debut” alone selling five million copies.
Bjork has won a total of ninety nine prestigious awards out of two hundred and twenty three nominations. These include four BRIT Awards out of nine nominations, four MTV Video Music Awards out of twelve nominations, two Golden Globes, and one Academy Award. She has also been nominated for thirteen Grammy Awards but has not won any so far. In her home town she has won twenty one Icelandic Music Awards. Apart from her singing career, she has also won a number of awards for her acting. She was given the Best Actress Award at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival for her remarkable acting in the film Dancer in the Dark.
Bjork has also appeared in several music lists by many notable music bodies. She acquired the twenty-ninth rank in VH1’s list for the 100 Greatest Women in Music. Rolling Stone included her at the sixtieth place in their 100 Greatest Singers of All Time list. She also appeared at the eighth position on MTV’s list of the 22 Greatest Voices in Music. She is one of the very few artists to have her very own retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in the year 2015.
Bjork has released a total of nine studio albums, thirty two singles, one compilation album and fifteen video albums so far. She has also toured the world for support of each of her studio albums. Her first solo album Debut peaked at number three on the UK Top Album Chart and at sixty one on the US Billboard 200. Her next albums were also huge successes, with her album Post being the top rated albums on many charts in the world. It peaked at number two on the UK Top Album, at number thirty two on the US Billboard 200, at number two on the Australian ARIA Charts and at number four on the Canadian Top Albums Chart.
Like for all her previous albums, Bjork is going on a tour yet again to support her latest album Vulnicura. The tour is going to hit North America in March 2015 and Europe in July of the same year.
