"Billy Ocean" was born in Fyzabad in Trinidad and Tobago as "Leslie Sebastian Charles." While he was still a kid he moved with his family to Essex in England. His father was a musician himself and he proved to be a big influence for a young Billy. He decided to pursue a career in music while also working as a tailor to earn living before that. Billy began singing by performing at various local clubs in and around central London. He is mainly a singer and lyricist but he can play instruments like guitar and steel drums very easily as well. In his career spanning over forty years he has worked with big recording labels like Epic Records, Jive, Aqua Music and GTO Records.
"Billy Ocean" was first sited by John Morphew who as his manager helped him to release one single in 1972 through Spark Records. In 1976 Ocean was able to sign a record deal with GTO and released his self-titled debut album. Two songs from this album "Love Really Hurts Without You" and "L.O.D (Love on Delivery)" managed to hit charts in countries like UK, Sweden, Germany and Australia. "Love Really Hurts Without You" was Ocean’s first song to earn a silver certification in UK. In 1977 he released another single "Red Light Spells Danger" that went silver in UK. His second studio album was titled "City Limit" that was released in 1980. After this, Billy managed to release two more studio albums "Nights (Feel Like Getting Down)" and "Inner Feelings" but these weren’t very successful.
In 1984 "Billy Ocean" captured the music world by storm with his album Suddenly. This was released by Jive Records and managed to land at #9 on both UK, US Charts and #13, #14, #10 and #43 respectively on Australian, Canadian, Finish and German charts. The album went gold in UK, 3x platinum in Canada and 2x platinum in the US. Billy continued his success by releasing two more platinum certified albums Love Zone and Tear Down These Walls. Both these albums charted on all major charts across the globe. Love Zone went gold in UK, 2x platinum in both Canada and the US. Tear Down These Walls also went gold in UK and platinum in Canada and the US.
After this, "Billy Ocean" released four more studio albums namely Time to Move On, Emotions In Motion, Because I Love You and Here You Are. The latest album by Billy is Here You Are that was released by Aqua Music Records in early 2013. Some chart topping singles of Billy are "Love Really Hurts Without You," "Caribbean Queen," "Loverboy," "There’ll Be Sad Songs" and "Suddenly."Some of his compilation albums are The Best of Billy Ocean, The Very Best of Billy Ocean, Let’s Get Back Together: The Love Songs of Billy Ocean and L.I.F.E- Love Is For Ever.
