Early Days
William Frederick Gibbons was born in Houston, Texas in December, 1949. On his fourteenth birthday, he was gifted his first guitar (an electric guitar). Shortly after, Gibbons formed his first music band Saints and then his second band The Coachmen after a couple of years. The sound of The Coachmen was inspired by the band Rolling Stones and other blues-infused music bands of the time.
However, soon the band developed interest in the psychedelic movement and changed its name to the Moving Sidewalks. With the change in name came a shift in sound as well. This band was soon noticed by Jimi Hendrix and it was not long before Moving Sidewalks was touring with the iconic guitarist on his Are You Experienced Tour in the year 1968.
ZZ Top
In the year 1969 Billy Gibbons decided to form a blues and rock based band which led to the inception of ZZ Top. The band’s first single was Salt Lick which they played at live gigs with Gibbons as the lead singer. ZZ Top’s first music record titled ZZ Top’s First Album hit the stores in 1971. Its success is attributed to the band’s several live shows. Their second record Rio Grande Mud released in 1972 did not fare too well commercially.
It was with ZZ Top’s 1973 record Tres Hombres that the band achieved recognition in the music industry. The record reached the Top 10 on the albums chart. It also spawned the band’s first Top 10 single – La Grange. They also performed a hit tour which eventually led them to start recording songs for a live record – Fandango which arrived in stores in 1975. The album hit the Top 10 on the albums chart and its song Tush hit the 20th spot on the Billboard Singles Chart.
ZZ Top’s following album Tejas was released in 1976 but went unnoticed by both critics and the audience. After this album, the band went on a three years hiatus. During this time, the band members drifted apart but then came together to release Deguello which gave two major hits – Cheap Sunglasses and I Thank You. The album too met a positive response and led to the band embarking on its first ever European gig.
The album Eliminator was released in 1983 and hit numerous genre charts and sold ten million copies, paving the way for the next album Afterburner which was also a commercial hit. The band went on to release six more albums but none of them achieved the level of success that Eliminator did. In the year 2004, ZZ Top received induction into the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
