Bilal is an American jazz and alternative hip hop singer hailing from Philadelphia who has been active in the music industry since 1995. He is a singer, a songwriter and a musician who plays the guitar and keyboards. He is also a record producer responsible for a number of popular records, albums and songs. He is signed onto the record label Plug Research Records and has been associated with many different acts over the course of his career including The Roots, Common, Soulquarians, Erykah Badu, Musiq Soulchild, Mos Def, The Dresden Soul Symphony, Beyonce, Jay-Z, Nottz, J Dilla and Dr. Dre. Bilal attended church at a young age and it was here that he grew fond of singing and jazz music. He then went to study at the Philadelphia High School for Creative Performing Arts after which he moved to New York City and enrolled at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. It was here that he formally studied jazz music and nourished his love for music. He then gradually entered into the New York City music scene and met some of its biggest acts including The Roots, Common and Erykah Badu. He caught the attention of Spin Doctors member Aaron Coleman at an after school jam session who then helped him get signed onto Interscope Records.
In 2001, Bilal released his first album titled as 1st Born Second . This album contained collaborations with Soulquarians with music by producers such as J Dilla and Dr. Dre. It contained a number of popular songs including Soul Sista, a song that ranked high up the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts. It also led to him gaining a large fan following and he began performing live at some of the biggest venues in New York City which many attended through Bilal tickets. His songs were praised particularly his use of a freeform style coupled with a classically trained falsetto voice which led to his music and style being labeled as neo-soul. In 2002, his songs were part of Red Hot Organization’s Red Hot + Riot a compilation album in tribute to the work of the legendary Nigerian artist, Fela Kuti. Proceeds from this album went to a number of charities fighting AIDS and raising awareness on it.
Bilal then went on to work on his next album, Love for Sale , which also featured producers J Dilla and Dr. Dre. This album praised equally by both fans and critics, leading to several years of live performances and tours. In 2010, Bilal returned to the music scene with his new album Airtight’s Revenge , his first in nine years. This album was released through Plug Research and it is an experimental album that blends in jazz with hip hop, rock, electronic, soul and blues. This album was very popular with the fans and also received rave reviews from music critics. One of this album’s songs, Little One , received a Grammy Award nomination which was followed by a tour of the same name in 2011.
Bilal ’s discography today features three albums, six singles and many appearences on songs of other artists such as Jay-Z, Beyonce, Erykah Badu, Common, Diddy and The Roots.
