Bilal attended church at a young age and it was here that he grew fond of singing and jazz music. His father encouraged him and regularly took him to visit some of Philadelphia’s best clubs for music. He then went to study at the Philadelphia High School for Creative Performing Arts after which he moved to New York City and enrolled at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. It was here that he formally studied jazz music and nourished his love for music. He then gradually entered into the New York City music scene and met some of its biggest acts including The Roots, Common and Erykah Badu. He caught the attention of Spin Doctors member Aaron Coleman at an after school jam session who then helped him get signed onto Interscope Records.
In 2001, Bilal released his first album titled as 1st Born Second . This album contained collaborations with Soulquarians with music by producers such as J Dilla and Dr. Dre. It contained a number of popular songs including Soul Sista, a song that ranked high up the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts. It also led to him gaining a large fan following and he began performing live at some of the biggest venues in New York City which many attended through Bilal tickets. This album was released through Plug Research and it is an experimental album that blends in jazz with hip hop, rock, electronic, soul and blues.
