The New Orleans based rapper, Big Freedia, has helped to popularize the genre of New Orleans Bounce music. She joined the bounce movement in 1998, and since then, she has produced numerous massive hits. Freedia was born as Freddie Ross in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1978. She showed an interest in music from a young age and was influenced by numerous artists including Patti LaBelle, Michael Jackson, Sylvester and Salt-n-Pepa. She went to the Walter L. Chen High School where she became the choir director and performed in the choir.
Her Musical Journey
In 1999, she released her bounce single ‘An Ha, Oh Yeah’ and started performing in different clubs across New Orleans. Her debut album, ‘Queen Diva’ was released in 2003. In 2005, New Orleans was struck by the deadly Hurricane Katrina that forced her to move to Texas, where she continued to spread her bounce music. She started performing bounce shows in Texas to spread awareness about this genre.
She started gaining national exposure after performing at the Voodoo Experience (2009) and the fest closing gig (2009) with Sissy Nobby and Katey Red at the Bingo Parlour Tent. In 2010, she made a guest appearance in Galactic’s album ‘Ya-Ka-May’ (2010). In the same year, she self released her album ‘Big Freedia Hitz Vol. 1’, which was a compilation of her underground singles. In 2011, this album was nominated at the 22nd GLAAD Media Awards.
She collaborated with Spank Rock in 2011 for his track, ‘Nasty.’ She also made appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live and the hit HBO television series ‘Treme’ in 2012. She has also appeared on ‘The Real,’ ‘NPR’s Marketplace,’ ‘Watch What Happens Live’ and ‘Last Call with Carson Daly.’ She starred in Fuse’s reality show ‘Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce’ in 2013. The show received massive success and became Fuse’s most watched TV series in history.
Her official debut album ‘Just Be Free’ was released in 2014. The Rolling Stone named this album as one of the best electronic releases of that year. It received critical acclaim from outlets like USA Today, SPIN and Pitchfork.
Tours and Collaborations
Known for her charismatic charm and star power, Big Freedia has performed with various musicians including Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa, and the pop duo, Kim and Matt. In 2013, Freedia toured with the band, The Postal Service, and opened for the group at various venues. Her voice was also used by Beyonce to open her ‘Formation World Tour’ in 2016.
Artists like Beyonce and Drake have also featured her in their songs. Her iconic voice was featured on Drake’s ‘Nice for What’ and Beyonce’s single ‘Formation.’ She collaborated with the pop singer Sia, for the song ‘Eye of the Needle’ in 2015. She was also featured on a number of RuPaul songs, including ‘Freaky Money’ and ‘Peanut Butter.’
In 2011, she was named the "Best Rap/Hip-Hop Artist" and the "Best Emerging Artist" in ‘Best of the Beat Awards.’ She also won the GLAAD Media Awards in 2014 for the ‘Outstanding Reality TV Show’ category.
She lives as a proud member of the LGBTQ community and has used her music to support and lift listeners of all sexual identities and genders. She believes in using music as a bridge to unite people belonging to different communities.
