The original line up of the band consisted of vocalist and rhythm guitarist Kevin Griffin; lead guitar player Joel Rundel; bassist Tom Drummond; and drummer Cary Bonnecaze. The four were studying at the Louisiana State University when the band was formed. The band refuses to disclose the origins of the name "Better Than Ezra." However some theories suggest it has been taken from an Ernest Hemmingway novel. Fans of the band refer to themselves as "Ezralites".
The band started work on their first studio album and released the album’s first single in 1990. The album, titled "Surprise" generated enthusiasm amongst the public. But just as the band seemed as though it was on its way to success in the music industry, tragedy befell them, as lead guitarist Joel Rundel, committed suicide the same year. The band understandably went on a hiatus. After a short break, they returned as a trio and started playing house shows and other gigs.
The major breakthrough for the band was the 1993 release of their second album Deluxe, which they initially released through their independent label, and was later re-released in 1995 through Elektra Records. Elektra Records was a major company and they provided the band with the marketing they needed at the time. In 1995, their single "Good" from the album, reached the top of the Hot Modern Rock Tracks charts. The record was certified Platinum by the year’s end.
The band released five more studio albums including "Friction, Baby" in 1996, "How Does Your Garden Grow" in 1998, "Closer" in 2001, "Before the Robots" in 2005 and "Paper Empire" in 2009. During the course of this time they underwent changes to their line up as well. Original drummer Cary Bonnecaze left the band in 1996. Travis McNabb replaced him and played as the band’s regular drummer till 2009, but McNabb amicably departed to play full time with another band "Sugarland". Michael Jerome replaced him and is currently the band’s third member.
Over the many years since its formation, the band has garnered quite a following. The "Ezralites" who follow the band wherever they perform love the live shows, especially the on stage antics of Kevin Griffin and Tom Drummond. The two original members of the band, they have performed hundreds of shows together and their chemistry on stage is wonderful. They crack jokes, tease the crowd, are energetic on stage and of course they play wonderful music to ensure that the audience has the time of their lives in a "Better Than Ezra" concert.
