The Second City originally opened up as a small cabaret theatre back in December 1959 in Chicago, IL. At that time, not even the founders of the theatre had a slightest idea of what this small cabaret theatre would turn into after decades; and what it did become is one of the most fruitful and leading comedy theatres on the globe. The founding members of the Second City included Paul Sills, Bernie Sahlins and Howard Alk. After its formation, the Second City gave birth to its own flavor and method of doing and presenting comedy where it went against all the norms of that time when it came to comedy theatre. The Second City rightfully exercised its right of making unusual and experimental works of theatre and comedy, and by doing so it stood out and differentiated itself from the rest.
In its initial years as a newly formed company, the Second City garnered some attention after following the success that Elaine May and Mike Nichols enjoyed on Broadway who previous worked at the Compass Players. And it wasn’t long enough after the Second City comedians like Barbara Harris, David Steinberg, Alan Arkin and Robert Klein were seen embedding the company’s reputation as one of the premiere comedy theatre in the country that had a standing for producing top notch comedians in the country. The Second City further enjoyed international fame following the Debut of Saturday Night Live which also featured an array of former Second City comedians. In the meantime in Canada, the company’s sister theatre laid foundation to SCTV, a sketch comedy series which featured star studded cast of Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Rick Moranis, Catherine O’Hara, Joe Flaherty, Dave Thomas and John Candy. SCTV soon established itself as one of the greatest sketch comedy series of all times.
As the time passed by, The Second City had grown into something that was a lot more than what it started from. During the 1980s the Second City was headed towards its new era of growth and novelty under the proprietorship of the company now lied with Len Stuart and Andrew Alexander. With constant growth for all that time, the Second City still marches on while producing talented comedians like Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, Tina Fey, Mike Myers and many more. In various forms of entertainment, Second City’s performers have made their mark in one way or the other. The Second City, as a comedy and theatre company, has grown substantially as well and it currently enjoys the status of being widely diverse entertainment company. The Second City has even established three training centers in Los Angeles, Toronto and Chicago to educate and train the aspiring comedians and performers. It also has four touring companies which keep on bring all the laughs from the Second City to various cities within the nation and even out of it. So as one of the touring companies brings the Best of Second City this year, make sure you have your Best of Second City tickets in hands beforehand.
