Bernstein was the original conductor of the songfest in 1977. He was among the very first American conductors to have grown into an international sensation. He produced a total of sixteen orchestras and performed the Songfest of 1985 on national television as part of the yearly A Capitol Fourth concert. This concert held on the beautiful lawn of the Capitol Building in Washington DC was attended by a massive crowd of around half a million people. It was also broadcasted and viewed all around the world. Bernstein has a long list of awards to his name including nine Grammys as well as a Life Time Achievement Award. Apart from these he had won two Tony Awards and various other prestigious honours.
Poetry has always provided the foundation for this countrywide celebration. The Songfest includes a variety of poems by the celebrated poets like E.E Cummings, Gertrude Stein, Walt Whitman, Frank O’Hara, Julio De Burgos and many others. Some of the famous poems presented here are "If you can’t eat you got to", "To the Poem", "Zizi’s Lament" and "Israfel". The poetic program encompasses a diversity of ethnicity, gender and sexualities and successfully managed to embrace multi-culturism even in the 70’s when it was not that much prevalent in society.
At this year’s Songfest a grand concert would be presented, the centrepiece of which would be the original work of Bernstein’s unpublished version of two-piano which was first played in the Songfest conducted by the legend (Leonard) himself. To present the tribute at the upcoming event this piece would be played by remarkable fellowship pianists, Siyi Fang and Leann Ostercamp. Fang is among the most talented students at the prestigious Julliard School located in New York, whereas Ostercamp is a young and rising artist who is increasingly being recognized for her incredible music and enthralling performances. She is the recipient of the Young Steinway Artist honour of 2010 and would be taking to the stage to perform in her usual, high-energy and fast delivery manner.
Other works to be presented include picks from Leonard’s beloved musicals and operetta’s which are West Side Story and Candide. The former is an original Broadway production of 1957 which derived its music from Bernstein; it had won numerous awards including a Drama Desk Award, two Tony and a Theatre World Award. The latter operetta’s revival of 1973 earned it a long list of awards including five Drama Desk and three Tony Awards. The pre-concert lecture would be delivered by the eminent and respected commentator, Alan Chapman and this year the daughter of Leonard, Jamie Bernstein would also be reciting several poems.
This event would be taking place at the Martin Theatre which is located at the Highland Park, Illinois. This historic theatre is the only original part which remains of the Ravinia Park. Elegantly restored, this recital hall has about 850 seats and is the home to stunning jazz events, chamber programs and recitals.
