Ben Folds Five is a rock band from Chapel Hill, North Carolina which originally came together in the 1990s. The band is led by their vocalist, Ben Folds who also plays multiple instruments and is also the key songwriter. He is joined by Robert Sledge who is the bass player and also plays the synthesizer and does the backup vocal, Darren Jessee who plays the drums and percussions, and who is also a co writer to Folds. They mainly play in the alternative rock genre and have achieved success as soft rock band. In the mainstream and pop front, they are categorized with the indie musicians, because their form of music is most closely associated with independent artists. Also, in the commercial market, they are perhaps most popular for their song “Brick”, which was a hit single during 1997. It was from the album, “Whatever and Ever Amen” and it was, at the time, their most successful album to date. It was the record that received the most airplay by producing hit after radio hit and topping most alternative rock charts. The band has now been together for more than 11 years, and is still performing collectively. They are, at the moment, on tour as well and are selling Ben Folds Five tickets.
During the time that they have been together, they have worked on three studio albums, one album that included the B-side tracks of the other albums, and eight officially released singles. Other than their solo work, they have worked on a number of collaborations, compilations and have contributed their music to a lot of soundtracks. They remained together from 1993 until the year 2000 before their broke apart. This disbandment was not due to a fight or any artistic differences; they felt as if they all needed to work on their own projects and knew that this was the right thing to do.
After they had dissolved, they reunited after nearly 8 years. This was for a one time concert in late September where they performed the complete track listing from their popular record, “The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner”. They came back together again three years later to record some new material. They ended up recording three new songs in 2011, all of which became part of their compilation album, “The Best Imitation of Myself: A Retrospect”. This was the album that contained all of their other unreleased, B-sided singles as well. With this record, they wanted to look back at their time together and see how they had progressed. In January of 2012, it was announced through Twitter that Ben Folds Five will be coming together as a full time band again and will be recording a brand new studio album. By March, they had announced a concert tour that would promote this new album. Ben Folds Five tickets went on sale once again and their original fans rejoiced and asked that more dates be added so everyone has a chance to be part of their reunion. This led to them becoming one of the main performers at the “Bonnaroo Festival” in Tennessee, and the “Deluna Festival” which takes place in Pensacola, Florida. They were also the headlining act at the “Mountain Jam Festival” in New York. By July of 2012, they announced that they were not only going to be touring in North America, but they will be travelling all around Europe as well to hopefully sing for some old fans and attain new ones as well. The concert tour was planned to kick off in the fall. Fans still have the chance to get their hands on tickets for some of the later shows.
After he had parted ways with the band, Ben Folds went on to have quite a decent solo career. He released three to four solo albums, the first being “Rocking the Suburbs” which was released in 2001, just a year after he had left the band. This was followed up by “Songs for Silverman”, which came out much later in 2005 and then by “Way to Normal”, a 2008 album. He also collaborated with well known artists on their records, such as William Shatner, writing songs for them or being on the production line. He also composed music for the soundtracks of films such as “Over the Hedge” and “Hoodwinked!” Now that he is back together with the band, he is putting his solo work on hold and concentrating on their upcoming tour.
