New Edition was formed in 1978 as an R&B group consisting of five members, three of which are now playing under the name, Bell Biv DeVoe. The group’s popularity was on its peak during the 1980s-90s when hits like "Cool It Now" and "Candy Crush" were released. In 1989, the band went on a six year long hiatus. Meanwhile, the band members started working on their own side projects and Bell Biv DeVoe was one of them. The two other band members successfully produced their solo records. Since their formation, the band has been bridging the gap between the two of the most popular genres, R&B and hip hop.
It was the suggestion of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and their producers to form this music trio which signed its first contract with MCA records under the name Bell Bivins DeVoe. The name was later changed to Bell Biv DeVoe upon the suggestion of Bivins who insisted on removing the ‘ins.’ American urban music underwent a major development upon their arrival on the music scene and the Ghetto Swing or Jack Swing genre was born. This new genre was a more stylish and a lot funkier infusion of hip hop with the urban contemporary sound of R&B.
The band debuted in 1990 with the release of its studio album, "Poison." It was released under MCA Records. The album is regarded as the pioneer sound of New Jack Swing in the early 1990s which had successfully combined the hip hop elements with pop, soul and funk music. This new fusion of sounds helped the band to gain an immediate fan base that comprised of the people that were looking for a harder edge sound. The album also paved the way for the future Rock & Blues acts.
The album ‘Poison’ was a major breakthrough and topped both the hip hop as well as R&B charts. Two of the album’s single, "Do Me" and the title track reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The remix version of "Do Me" by Epic Mazur and Richard Wolf was again ranked number one on the Dance charts. The album also produced other significant hit numbers including "When Will I See You Smile Again?" "B. B. D. (I Thought It Was Me)" and "She’s Dope." Selling more than three million copies, ‘Poison’ was certified triple Platinum. The remix version of the album titled "WBBD-Bootcity" was released soon after.
In 1991, the band started their own record company by the name of Biv Entertainment. It started under the license of Motown Records and Bivins became its A&R executive. Among the initial signings included "Boyz II Men" and "Another Bad Creation." In addition to these, Bivins also produced for MC Brains and TLC. The same year, they also did a number with New Edition which was titled "Word to the Mutha!" In 1993, Bell Biv Devoe released "Hootie Mack," their second album under MCA Records. The album reached number six on the R&B charts and was eventually certified Gold. The next album, ‘BBD’ was released under Biv 10 Records in 2001. The band has also performed with New Edition on a couple of occasions.
This year, you can catch this talented trio live as they reach your city for an exciting performance featuring some of their hit songs like "Poison" and "The Best Things in Life Are Free."
