Born and raised in New York, Bela Fleck first started playing banjo at the age of fifteen. In high school, he got enrolled in the music studies and studied banjo from Tony Trischka. Later, he moved to Boston and played with a group named Tasty Licks which consisted of Mark Schatz, Pat Enright and Jack Tottle. With the release of his first solo "Crossing the Tracks" in 1979, Fleck started getting the attention of artists like Jimmy Gaudreau and Glen Lawson with whom he formed a trio named Spectrum in 1981. The same year, he was invited to join New Grass Revival by Sam Bush. For nine years, Fleck stayed with the band and in the meantime released "Drive," his second solo album. After ten years, he formed "Bela Fleck and the Flecktones" with Victor Wooten and grew even more popular among the jazz fans.
