Based in Beijing, China, the classical Beijing Symphony Orchestra was founded in October 1977. The orchestra has a diverse number of musicians, having unparallel command over various genres. Several of them have won national or international awards. Since its inception, the orchestra has presented a number of renowned works by both Chinese and foreign composers.
The Orchestra is currently led by music director and principle conductor Tan Lihua. Musical consultants Li Delun, Huang Feili and Jin Xiang have also made enormous contribution towards the orchestra’s development. The orchestra also has a regular co-operation with soloists, conductors and other orchestras both locally and from abroad.
The Orchestra gives regular concerts annually with a rich repertoire. It presents concerts of Chinese symphonies in different styles and features. It puts continuous efforts to launch concerts with Chinese traditional operas. The performances have met great critical acclaim. Beijing Symphony Orchestra has released four amazing records with EMI after 2007 forming first co-operation between EMI and a Chinese Symphony orchestra. In 2008, the orchestra completed 212 works of recordings of national anthems for29th Beijing Olympic games. The recording was unanimously appreciated by International Olympic committee. Owing to its innovation and musicianship, the orchestra is a prominent part of Beijing’s New Year Concert.
Beijing Symphony Orchestra has a repertoire that includes works by Beethoven, Berlioz, Tchaikovsky, Mahler, Haydn, Schubert, Bruckner, Mendelssohn, Dvorak, Brahma, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff and orchestral work and symphonies by Handel, Rossini, Wagner, Smetana, Offenbach, Verdi, Liszt, Copland, Stravinsky, Grieg, Bruch, Delibes, Dukas, Bartok, Glinka, Bizet, Mussorgsky and several others. The orchestra presented Dvorak’s 6th symphony in D major, 7th in D minor, first time. It also presented Bruckner’s Symphony no. 3 in D major and Gliere’s symphony no. 2 in C minor much to the audiences’ surprise.
