Behemoth is an extreme metal band from Poland that was formed in 1991. The band is known to have established the Polish extreme metal underground scene. In its early days, the band played traditional black metal music, combined with pagan lyrical content. The stylistic elements of the group changed to more thelemic and occult themes. Most of their earlier material was written by Nergal or Kryzsztof Azarewicz. Later albums saw a further shift in the musical style of the group, but they still remained true to their signature style.
Early Music by Behemoth
After its formation as a trio in 1991, the group began making demos. Their earlier demos were Endless Damnation, The Return of the Northern Moon and …From the Pagan Vastlands. The latter of these was released in 1993 by the local label Pagan Records and was subsequently released by the American Wild Rags. In 1995, the extreme metal group released Sventevith (Storming Near the Baltic) and Grom, their second album, the very next year. Around this time, the slowly rising group finally got the chance to play live shows in Poland and gained some stage experience.
Behemoth’s big break came when it signed with the Italian recording label, Avantgarde Music in 1998. After this signing, the group released a hugely successful album, Satanica. This album was an example of their sound’s evolution – it went from black metal sound to blackened death metal.
After some lineup changes, the band got back on track and signed on to another Polish label, Mystic Production. With this label, it released Thelema 6. The elements of sound changed to some extent on this album with massive guitar parts and very precise drumming. Following the release of this album, the band got the chance to perform at many live events and even had their first headlining tour along with Khold and Carpathian Forest.
Changing Styles and More Music
In the early 2000s, Behemoth focused on creating new music with the help of their friend, the sound engineer Arkadiusz Malczewski. The album Zos Kia Cultus (Here and Beyond) was produced as a result, with some stylistic variations. Behemoth started appearing in live shows across the world, including their first headlining appearance in the American continent. Touring in the UK and Europe also took off as the Behemoth began to grow more popular beyond the borders of Poland.
Behemoth’s seventh studio album, Demigod, was released in 2004 and received a very positive response from the critics. It also opened at number 15 on the Polish charts. Their next album, Evangelion was released in March 2009 and was produced by the British producer Colin Richardson. The album was a true representation of the band’s unique sound and was very well received. Following the release of this album, the band also got a chance to perform at the esteemed Rockstar Mayhem Festival, alongside other industry greats, such as Slayer, All That Remains, Bullet For My Valentine, Marilyn Manson, Job for a Cowboy and Cannibal Corpse.
Perhaps the band’s biggest achievement to date is their 2014 album, The Satanist. The album, initially announced in March 2013 received widespread critical acclaim and quickly became very popular with fans all around the world.
In 2016, Behemoth announced that they would begin working on a follow-up album to The Satanist. Lead singer, Nergal started posting clips of riffs he was working on to his Instagram account. The estimated release of this album is said to be around the fall of 2018.
But if you can’t wait for the new album to drop, you can always get your hands on these Behemoth tickets and enjoy the band live in action as they perform a series of shows in 2018.
