The critics have described Beethoven Lives Upstairs as a perfect piece of art. As soon as the curtain is raised, the narrator takes the audiences to the eighteenth century and introduces Beethoven as a paying guest of a ten year old boy Christoph and his family. The young boy is not happy to have a stranger in his house and shares this with his uncle Kurt. Later he learns that Beethoven is a great pianist and composer. Beethoven wrote his music on the walls and was all the all time pounding on his piano, which didn’t settle well with the young boy. He was finding it hard to accept him at his place, so he writes letters to his uncle frequently telling him how it is to have Beethoven staying at his house. The first letter expresses Christoph’s anger that the stranger is no less than an intruder in his life. The dreadful noise coming out of his room disturbs him and his twin sisters and all the kids laugh at him because of this strange old man’s eccentric behavior. He pleads to his uncle to tell his mom to send Beethoven away. As time passes Christoph starts adjusting to the old tenant’s presence. His feelings soften for the artist especially when he gets to know about Beethoven’s unhappy childhood. He realizes how frustrating his life would be being a deaf composer. He shares the loneliness of the artist by empathizing with him and discovers a great heart behind the powerful music. He listens to the artist’s compositions and their bond grows strong with time. With the help of his uncle and the time that he spends with Beethoven, he gets to know more about his mood swings, rough manners and temper. The unusual happenings in the play like the artist spilling water over his head just to get into the right mood to make music explains his devotion in making the ninth symphony. The powerful and touching drama gives a real insight to the artist’s life and would make the audiences fall in love with his music all over again. Beethoven felt that his music had the power to change the world, so he always made an effort to keep it meaningful for the audiences. The story has not only been staged but has also been recorded on CDs. Its fan following stretches out across the nation and has as many listeners as viewers.
