Singer, songwriter, musician, rap artist, multi-instrumentalist and record producer Beck Hansen (known professionally by his stage name “Beck”) first came into prominence during the early 1990s. His music had a bit of an experimental feel to it with its lo-fi variety and the fusion of elements from different genres.
This became his signature style over the years and he gained lots of popularity as a creator of expansive musical collages that included bits and pieces from many different genres. Beck is known today as one of the most versatile musicians in the industry with his work encompassing folk, soul, hip-hop, funk, country, pop, alternative rock, electronic and psychedelic (psychedelia) music. To-date, the Los Angeles native has released more than a dozen full-length albums, three of which were released independently. Apart from this, Beck also has many non-album singles and a book (titled “Song Reader”) of sheet music to his credit. It contains more than a hundred pages of art along with sheet music for 20 different songs.
Beck released his debut album Golden Feelings through an independent label back in 1993. Following this release and encouraging reviews, Beck caught the attention of several major record labels. However, he would go on to release another album independently in 1994 before signing with his first major label. Titled Stereopathetic Soulmanure, it sold close to 150,000 copies.
Following the successful release of his second independent album, Beck signed with his first major label in 1994 and promptly released his first album with them less than a month later. Titled Mellow Gold, it earned Platinum certification from the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America).
“Loser,” the lead single from this album, was ranked number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. It successfully introduced Beck to a more mainstream audience while earning him the first of his multiple Grammy nominations. To-date, he has sold more than 10 million records in the United States and over 16 million around the world.
A highly decorated musician, Beck has nearly two dozen Grammy nominations to his credit with more than half a dozen wins. He has also been nominated multiple times for the California Music Awards and the MTV Europe Music Awards. In addition, he has been a multiple nominee and winner at the Brit Awards. Beck is well-known as one of the most creative and idiosyncratic alternative rock artists.
