Beats Antique is a scintillating fusion of rock and traditional belly dancing that has captivated millions in the U.S. and abroad. The group consists of three members Zoe Jakes, David Satori and Tommy Cappel. Of them, David brings his extensive know-how of various types of world music to the table as he had always been a music lover. David started performing during his high school days and that fascination with music led him to earning a music performance and composition degree from the California Institute of the Arts. It was during his university days that he created The Funnies, an instrumental group. The band went on to record and release a couple of albums and provided the first steps for David’s proper introduction to the world of music.

He then re-located to San Francisco to further his career and became a member of an afro-beat band called Aphrodesia. He went to all parts of the country and to different parts of Africa that helped him grow his knowledge of the kind of music being played in various parts of the globe. The last performance on that road trip was at a shrine in Lagos which was constructed by Femi Kuti, the son of Fela Kuti, the famous Nigerian artist and political activist. Femi himself was a sit in player of Aphrodesia and it was him and his talents that paved the way for David to go on and produce the group’s 2007 album Lagos by Bus.

It was in 2004 that Zoe Jakes met David for the first time and the duo started going out. She has always been a wonderful dancer who started showing her belly dancing skills in 2000. Her routines are multi-dimensional that combine different belly dancing techniques to stunning effect. Zoe was a member of the Extra Action Marching Band and Yard Dogs Road Show for years and  has also been on the road constantly as part of The Indigo Belly Dance Company for the last half a decade or so.  It was all dancing to traditional belly dancing music but that changed when she began to go for tours with the Bellydance Superstars in the year 2005. Together David and Zoe began to experiment with electronic music and that is what made her turn her attention to the genre.

Tommy Cappel’s introduction to Beats Antique was due to his association with David and Zoe. Zoe met him for the first time when they were both members of the Extra Action Marching Band. David on the other hand had met him quite a few years back. Tommy was brought up in Fairfax to parents who were both music instructors and his brother was a drummer. That introduction to music at such an early age paved the way for him to become a fantastic drummer himself. He had formed his own group with a bunch of friends when he was only six years old. He then went on to study at the prestigious Berklee College of Music and got a degree in studio drumming. He didn’t stick to one specific genre and his amazing repertoire brought him a lot of recognition.

Beats Antique became official in 2007. Zoe asked Mile Copeland, her manager, to work on an album. He agreed and they all went to work on Tribal Derivations. The album was a concept creation that centered around Zoe’s dance skills. Their next album Collide followed and shot straight to prominent positions on various charts around the world. Their next release was titled Contraption Vol.1 and a lot of other artists teamed up Beats Antique to work on it. Blind Threshold and the ten track masterpiece Elektraphone came afterwards to solidify their status as one of best in the business.

Beats Antique is a sensation that has given fans an opportunity to witness something different and electrifying. Their popularity graph has seen a constant upward trajectory and if this is an indication then sky is the limit for them. Book your Beats Antique tickets and experience the magic weave its spell over you.
