Who Is This Kid?
You’d be forgiven for not knowing Bazzi a few months ago. Born in Dearborn, Michigan, to Lebanese-American parents, Andrew Bazzi learned to play the guitar and oud (a Middle Eastern instrument) as a child. The 10-year old Bazzi was in his church band, playing live before a couple thousand people every week. When he was in his sixth grade, he performed for his school’s talent show. As a 15-year old, Bazzi was busy uploading covers of his songs on his YouTube channel. He knew what he wanted in life by the time he turned 17. To become a professional musician, he moved to Los Angeles where he finished high school.
“Andrew Bazzi went from Vine to viral”
In 2013, Bazzi made his Vine account and within two years he had over 1 million followers. In September 2015, he released “Bring Me Home” which made him the first artist to release a Vine “Featured Track.” His new found success was what he had been waiting for; he built on it by releasing additional singles such as “Sober,” “Got Friends” and “Alone.” In 2016, he was featured on the Fancy Cars’ track, “Fun.”
And then came “Mine”
Bazzi’s career can be divided into two periods – pre-October 2017 and post-October 2017. Released in October 2017, this single got famous after becoming an Internet meme when a Snapchat lens filter was used with the track. In January 2018, the single debuted at No.56 on the US Billboard Hot 100. By April, it had climbed up to No.11. In addition, Bazzi also released “Honest,” “Gone” and “Why?”, though they did not turn out to be as big a success as “Mine.” All of these singles and others would go to make Bazzi’s debut studio album, Cosmic.
Cosmic made an immediate impression. It debuted at No.35 on the Billboard 200 and later climbed 21 spots, peaking at No.14. In addition to the American music lovers, Bazzi’s music was noticed and appreciated the world over. Therefore, Cosmic charted at No.14 in Denmark, No.13 in Canada and No.65 in the UK. In addition, the album also charted in Sweden, New Zealand, Ireland, Finland, The Netherlands, Belgium and Australia.
Collaborations & Tours
Other than the charts and music fans the world over, Bazzi has been noticed by other artists as well. His popularity has led him to work with the likes of Marshmello. In addition, Camila Cabello in March 2018 announced that Bazzi will be featuring as a special guest on her Never Be the Same Tour.
What Gets Him Going and Why Should You Listen to His Music?
Bazzi says that connecting with his fans and making them feel loved is what motivates him to write music. Giving an interview to Billboard magazine’s Rebecca Schiller, Bazzi said people should listen to his music because its “real and honest and vulnerable” and that it is “something that everybody can connect to and relate to.”
What’s Bazzi Up to?
As mentioned earlier, he’s touring (a sold out tour btw). He has already played Bonnaroo. Bazzi will however take a break in August to play second-to-the-headliner at Lollapalooza. “Mine” has been certified double platinum, while Cosmic has been certified gold. So, check him out with Bazzi tickets in hand.
