Think of combining different composers and singers. Add to that a passion for contemporary music; the result – a musical band by the name of ‘Bajofando’. This band hails from ‘Rio de la Plata’, a strip of land between Uraguay and Argentina. The idea of a band consisting of musicains from Argentina and Uruagay was first concieved years ago by Gustavo Santaolalla and Juan Campodonico. They wanted to create contemporary music of the Rio de la Plata and you need to get Bajofondo tickets to witness, that they have successfully done just that.
They have earned a reputation for being the pioneers of “electronica tango”. They blended acoustic tango and electronic music. Besides tango, they also ventured into DNB, house music, trip-hop and chill out; producing innovative music by mixing the different genres. The band refers to itself as a “collective of composers, singers and artists”.
Their first record was released in 2003, titled Bajofondo Tango Club, which was quite succesful. After two year came a second project which was a lone effort from pianist, composer and DJ Luciano Supervielle. Their third album named Mar Duce, fused latin alternative with contemporary music forms. It was a move from their usual, yet unusual music. it was recorded in Buenos Aries, Los Angeles, Madrid, Montevideo, New York and Tokyo. The cosmopiltan attraction of Bajofondo is aptly reflected in this piece of art. Not only were the locations dynamic and diverse, the list of artists featured was something very tantalizing as well. The fascinating list includes names like Elvis Costello the British singer and composer, Nelly Furtado Canadian singer, Mala Rodriguez the Spanish singer and several Rio de la Plata artists.
Bajofondo members have had remarkable individual careers. The allaince of muscians and producers in the recording studio has yielded something new. With numerous tours under their belt, the alliance has matured into a true band. Their music has also grown and broadened resulting in their name changing from the initial ‘Bajofondo Tango Club’ to just ‘Bajofondo’ as was announced in 2008, during a live concert in Berlin.
The group also considers the tag of ‘electronica tango’ slightly unfitting due to the variety of music that they produce. Gustavo Santolalla is reported to have said “We don’t like the label of “electronica tango”, because we don’t consider what we do to be either tango or electronica.”
Bajofondo has performed at many of the worlds biggest and renowned Electronica Music festivals. They have charmed fans in Denmark, England, Belgium and Spain. Apart from these countries they have performed in fifteen European countries as well. Twice they have toured the Untied States, with a dazzling performance in 2006 at the Lincoln Centre in New York. They have managed to give sensational live performances and have gained a lot of popularity.
Currently their line up features eight permanent members. Among the eight is a VJ and vocalist, who changes images on stage as the music progresses. Time and again, other artists from different cultures and countires have temporarily been part of their band. Yet something magical in the music unifies them. ‘Cosmic tango’ as Santolalla likes to put is something to which every one can relate.
Bajofondo continue to gain experience and make music that is pushing at the boundaries of what is called traditional music. Their work constantly evolves as they hone the musical elemets present from their first album and turn it into newer and fresh music.
