B2K’s arrival on the R&B scene
Dreux Pierre Frédéric or Lil’ Fizz, Jarell Damonté Houston Sr. or J-Boog and De'Mario Monte Thornton or Raz-B met each other in 1998 and later thought of starting a group together. Managed by record producer and film director, Chris Stokes, the band’s lineup was completed when Omari Ishmael Grandberry or Omarion joined the group. The guys then chose to call their band, B2K or Boys of the New Millennium and soon got things rolling by starring in Lil Bow Wow’s video for, Ghetto Girls as a cameo. The band later went on to open for him on his, ‘Scream Tour I.’
B2K introduced its brand of music to the world in late 2001 when their debut single, Uh Huh was released to the public. The song got them some exposure to global fame as it charted in almost every major country including the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia. The track helped the guys to create curiosity among the fans who began to ask the band to release more music and they did just by coming out with their first self-titled studio effort in 2002.
‘B2K’ featured groovy songs like, Gots Ta Be and Why I Love You both of which became hits, propelling the album to reach second spot on the Billboard 200. It also achieved gold sales status in the United States and was met with positive response from both AllMusic and Q. Following the release of the record, the quartet went on to perform a special concert for Nickelodeon in July of 2002 and also appeared in a couple of magazines, ‘Right On’ and ‘Word Up.’
Taking over the world
During the later part of October, 2002, B2K recorded their first holiday album and released, ‘Santa Hooked Me Up.’ The record didn’t get them much success and received lukewarm response from the critics. It contained eleven songs including two collaborative tracks, Sexy Boy Christmas with TG4 and Everyone’s Home for Christmas with Batman of IMx. During the same month, the guys released its third single, Bump, Bump Bump which featured three-time Grammy winner, P. Diddy. The song became the greatest hit of their career, reaching atop the Billboard Hot 100 and was even certified platinum in Australia by selling more than seventy thousand copies in the country.
The guys then started to build hype for their second studio project, ‘Pandemonium!’ which arrived in the stores on December 10, 2002. The record brought them even more success as it went on sell more than one million units in the United States thus earning platinum plaque from the RIAA which helped their career elevate to new heights. It featured collaborations with stars like, Romeo of IMx, Makeba Riddick and Jhené Aiko and produced four singles out of which the music video of Girlfriend starred, Jennifer Freeman, Will Smith and Flex Alexander.
Starring in You Got Served
Apart from making music, all of the members of B2K also featured in the dance drama film, ‘You Got Served.’ Written and directed by Chris Stokes, the movie received praise from everyone and opened at the first spot in the U.S. The guys also worked on the soundtrack album of the film which came out on December 23, 2003. The record received 3/5 stars from AllMusic.
