What’s in a name?
Ferg’s surname is a play on his family name of Ferguson. “A$AP” stands for the A$AP Mob Collective, an American hip hop collective that was formed in Harlem during 2006. The aim of this collective has been to pen down its individuals’ own, real experiences in rap. Harlem is an area of New York that has historically been rich in contributing to Black Literature, Art and Music. Therefore, it only seems fitting that these individuals attempting to revitalize the hip hop narrative do so in Harlem.
Although belonging to Harlem’s Hamilton (Hungry Ham) Heights, Ferg has always risen above all its notoriety. While most of his age-mates were joining bands or dealing drugs, he attended art school, set up clothing and jewelry lines instead. The rapper takes pride in the fact that he has an element of unpredictability. While one would assume rappers to have a certain reputation, Ferg is happy in denouncing such expectations and paving his own path.
In 2010, Ferg teamed up with his high-school friend, A$AP Rocky and released viral hits such as “Get High”, “Kissin’ Pink” and “Ghetto Symphony” for Rocky’s label LONG.LIVE.A$AP. These singles caused the duo instant fame and launched him into a rapping career which is still prospering today.
Ferg’s real fame as a solo artist came with the release of his single “Work”. With this song, the rapper said he wanted to maintain “the lyrical truth”. He says he wants to talk about real life experiences in his songs, an aim that has remained consistent even today.
His second album, “Rebirth” proved a standout moment for Ferg. In it, he created two characters representative of the evolution of man; Trap-lord and Hood-Pope. He defined a Trap-Lord as an individual caught in a vicious cycle and attempting to rise out of his circumstances. A Hood-Pope, however, is an individual who has risen out of these circumstances and is now equipped with the capacity to be helpful to other Trap-lords. In this album, Ferg opens up about honesty however, he does it with humor.
His music videos stand-out amongst other rappers’ because while Ferg is building on a rough and tough personality, he is doing so with a certain level of goofiness. They are arty, often with optical illusions and creative boldness in music and fashion choices. In this respect, he reinforces being a part of A$AP Mob, at the same time staying true to his life story.
Tours and Concerts
Ferg has dipped his fingers in many different concert and touring activities this year. For this reason, there are multiple chances for audiences to catch the twenty-eight year old rapper in action. One such opportunity is Future’s “Nobody Safe Tour”. The event has brought together rappers such as Ferg, Drake, Ty Dolla and Zoey Dollaz for an evening dedicated solely to hip-hop. The tour features special on-stage collaborations by these artists, which are exclusively a live experience. Therefore, the Nobody Safe Tour is an exclusive performance that may not be recreated elsewhere.
Along with this tour, A$AP Ferg is also touring the US with his solo concerts. These concerts give an audience a greater chance to listen to the rapper’s own music, as he performs his own work in these. Having entered the last leg of these concerts now, Ferg still has a few venues left to perform in. There are a few tickets remaining for certain dates, and we would urge you to book yours as soon as you can, if you want to catch this esteemed rapper in action. If you would like an evening of pure hip hop mixed with Ferg’s unique creative expression, Asap Ferg tickets are available now.
