Arlo’s family has a history in performing arts that is not limited only to his father. His mother Marjorie Mazia Guthrie was a professional dancer and his grandmother Aliza Greenblatt also earned fame for her poetry. Additionally, growing up the artist also got musical exposure from his father’s friends.  These included Pete Seeger and Cisco Houston.

Arlo Guthrie did not aim to pursue a career in music and his venture into showbiz was a coincidence. He was rejected by the army for having a minor criminal record of loitering. Later on he started his musical career at the Club 47 in Cambridge, MA. He was positively received for singing about the loitering charge that proved to be the main hurdle in his aim to get into army. Later he performed the same track at the Newport Folk Festival as part of the main event on the closing night. The performance in front of an audience exceeding twenty thousand in number brought him immense fame. Also this led to him signing with the recording label Warner Bros. Records.

He became a household name with the release of his 1967 album Alice’s Restaurant. The album spent ninety nine weeks on the Billboard Charts and went on to be certified platinum. Most of all he found fame for his song ‘Alice's Restaurant Massacree.’ At the time of release the musical monologue was played on radio broadcasts across the country. Later on it has come to be a Thanksgiving Day tradition and is still widely played on radio across the US. A symbol of the late sixties, the song focuses on the Vietnam War. Two years later a film was made on the song. The artist himself played the role based on him.

The artist has earned more fame with every year. His album Amigo went on to get a perfect five star rating from Rolling Stone. Arlo has also won over audiences at the 1969 Woodstock Festival. Equally famous now he is still followed by a large number of fans. He has taken to stage with a variety of artists. These include Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Josh Ritter, David Bromberg, Judy Collins, Pete Seeger, Emmylou Harris and many more.

Not only does the artist raise awareness about social injustices but he actively promotes goodwill projects. Working towards this cause he has converted the church that his album Alice’s Restaurant is based on into Guthrie Center. The center is setup as an interfaith gathering place and provides free meals for the community. Also it provides support for families and patients suffering from life threatening diseases.
