The race first started in 1981 by the president of the Arlington Park, Joe Joyce. It’s the premier grand horse racing event to have introduced huge prize money of $1000000. The event was quick to achieve a grade one stature accruing to the abundance of talent which competed in these races. Just two years after the inaugural race, Arlington Million became a Grade I event alongside notable races like Secretariat Stakes, Beverly D. Stakes and the American Derby. This contest is part of the qualifying stages of the prestigious Breeders’ Cup Championship and the winner of this race automatically earns the right to compete at the venerated Breeders’ Cup Turf.
The only runner to have won the Arlington Million title twice was John Henry, a thoroughbred American race horse who had won a total of close to $6.6 million in earnings and a staggering 39 career wins. It won the inaugural race of 1981 and again managed to become the first horse to thunder across the finish line in 1984. John Henry was a two-time recipient of Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year and had been listed at 23rd spot in the Top 100 U.S Race Horses of the 20th Century.
Some of the world’s best jockeys have taken part in this race these include big names like Ramon A. Dominguez, Cash Asmussen, Jerry D. Bailey and many others. The Texas native, Cash rode in more than 3000 races throughout his career and has received many titles including the ‘Eclipse Award’ for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey. Bailey is another top Jockey who has countless accolades to his name. These include six ‘Eclipse Awards’ and the 1992, ‘George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award’ which is arguably the most esteemed prize among the North American jockeys. Apart from this he is an inductee in the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame.
At last year’s Arlington Million race, Dominguez invaded the tracks with Little Mike and won the cup in an exciting event. Mike impressively recovered from its slow tempo at the start and galloped ahead of the Great Britain’s, Afsare at the very last moments to secure a wire to wire victory over its rivals. Previously Dominguez had ridden the American Stallion, Gio Ponti to win the 2009 Arlington Million.
The races take place at the Illinois based, Arlington Park which offers one of the most impressive turfs of the country. The oval track extends to a length of 1 ¼ miles and the backstretch of this venue can cater for up to 2000 horses.
