The program will be conducted by the British composer, cellist and pianist, Jonathan Cohen, who is most popular for his compositional work releases that include Enchanted Forest, Handel: Finest Arias for Base Voice, Amoretti, Arias for Guadagni and Porpora. These records that were released through Archiv Produktion, Hyperion Records and Berlin Classics, were able to capture the hearts of classic music lovers, all over America. The composer of these releases, Cohen is also the founder of the renowned British ensemble, Arcangelo where he has redeemed the post of Artistic Director, cellist and conductor, while also working as Les Arts Florissants’ Associate Conductor. This time this musical genius is making his way to the Carnegie Hall, where he will be presenting a spellbinding performance by his very own creation. Founded in 2010, Arcangelo was established with the mission to mark its name amongst the leading musical organizations in the world. With the aim of perfecting the use of modern as well as historic instruments, Cohen has taken the responsibility on his own shoulders to lead his group of talented musicians towards the right direction.
With the help of a recruitment screening process that was based upon the art of collaboration when creating chamber music, Cohen has been extremely stringent when it comes to the application of this chamber music creating ideal. Such a notion has attracted musicians of the highest caliber to audition for Cohen and gain acceptance into his prestigious ensemble. Within the first year of the group’s existence it was able to blast its way to the very top of the music scene. Performing at countless theatres, concert halls and festivals throughout America and Europe, Cohen along with his crew has been able to strengthen their foothold when it comes to quality classic music.
After the release of five CD releases over a period of two years, BBC Radio 3 accredited Arcangelo claiming to produce "Outstanding Recordings of the Year". The musical group was also announced as the recipient of the Sky Arts South Bank Award in 2013.
Those who want to watch the upcoming showcase that will be presented by Cohen along with his group, should know that the talented musicians will be performing J.S. Bach Concerto for Orchestra and Violin in A Minor, J.C. Bach Passacaglia "Mein freund ist Mein" and Handel’s Apollo e Dafne and Concerto Grosso in D Minor, Op. 6, No. 10. The main highlight of the event will be Apollo e Dafne, which is a cantata that was composed by Handel in 1710. This forty minutes composition depicts the story of Apollo, a hero who has just killed a Dragon in Greece, releasing the city from the monster’s tyranny. As this arrogant conqueror sets his eyes on a lovely maiden, Daphne, he instantly falls in love with her. However, seeing his distrustful personality, she refuses to be with Apollo and in order to escape this persistent lover, the maiden transforms into a laurel tree after which Apollo falls into despair and vows that it will be his tears that will water this beautiful tree till the day of his death.
