Moving to Puerto Rico
Born to a Dominican mother and a Puerto Rican father in New York, Austin Agustin Santos or more famously known as Arcángel is one of few reggae stars to achieve immense popularity outside of Latin America. Growing up listening to different genres of music, he decided to become a rapper after getting inspired by stars like, Tempo and Tego Calderón. To follow his dreams, he took a flight to Puerto Rico in 2002 where he developed his love for reggae music and soon formed a reggaeton group with De La Ghetto.
The duo latter signed a record deal with Zion. To start things off, they spawned three mixtapes two of which, ‘La Factoria Del Flow Vol.1’ and ‘La Factoria Del Flow Vol. 2’ came out in 2006 while the last, ‘La Factoria Del Flow Vol.3’ was released in 2007. Arcángel and De La Ghetto also appeared on a couple of reggaeton compilation records by Héctor "El Father" and Luny Tunes titled, ‘Sangre Nueva’ and ‘Mas Flow: Los Benjamins respectively. Moreover, they also put out a studio album, ‘Las Nuevas Amenazas’ in 2007 and have also recorded a number of singles together including, Sorpresa, Ella Quiere and Me Enamoré De La Glock.
After making their mark in Puerto Rico by releasing many memorable tracks and playing sold out shows, they decided to part ways in early 2007 to focus on their solo careers. However, Arcángel and De La Ghetto still work with each other from time to time.
In 2008, Arcángel planned to release his first studio album but his decision was later cancelled. It was because his record leaked online. The tracks that were supposed to be on his debut studio effort were soon distributed on his website under the title, ‘La Maravilla.’ Out of those songs, Pa’ Que la Pases Bien became popular in the United States. It also charted at the thirty two spot on the Latin Rhythm Airplay chart. In the same year, Arcángel founded his own record label, Flow Factory Inc. and came out with another studio album, ‘El Fenómeno’ which featured appearances by artists like, Don Omar, Tempo and J-King. It also included one of his most successful songs, Chica Virtual which landed at the twenty second spot on the Hot Latin Songs.
The following year, Arcángel announced a European Tour. This helped him make new fans in countries like, France, Portugal, Germany, England, Spain, Denmark and the Netherlands. In 2010, two of his mixtapes, ‘The Problem Child’ and ‘Optimus A.R.C.A’ came out, both of which gave him more success.
Sentimiento, Elegancia & Maldad
It took three years for Arcángel to release new music. During this time, he was seen collaborating with names like, Daddy Yankee, Don Omar and Farruko. His album, ‘Sentimiento, Elegancia & Maldad’ saw the light of day in 2013. It debuted at the first spot on the Top Latin Albums.
A couple of years later his last studio effort, ‘Los Favoritos’ hit the markets which was supported by a couple of singles, Tu Cuerpo Me Hace Bien and 50 Sombras De Austin. These songs entered the Latin Rhythm Airplay chart at the fifth and twentieth spot respectively.
