The singer hails from Newton, Massachusetts. She received her formal education in music from the renowned American music school ‘New England Conservatory of Music.’ She has some family background in music. O’Donovan’s father has been host of Celtic Sojourn, a radio musical show. Her fascination for music started in her childhood. Quite early in her life she received musical training in Ireland. While at school she was regularly spending her holidays in the country studying Celtic folk music and dance.
O’Donovan formed her first ever group Crooked Still in 2001. Based in Boston the band got local recognition for its alternative bluegrass music. Gaining in popularity they were invited to perform at the folk music events Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and Newport Folk Festival. From there they went on to tour both across the country and the world. O’Donovan is also the lead vocalist for the folk noir band Sometymes Why. The all female trio is completed by Ruth Ungar Merenda and Kristin Andreassen. The singer has also enriched her musical experience as a member of the jazz grass band The Wayfaring Strangers. As part of the group she performed as the lead vocalist. Within the genre of jazz she has collaborated with the group Dave Douglas Quinte.
Experimenting with different musical style she has also teamed up with Utah Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pops Orchestra. She has also earned fame for her songwriting. Noted artist Alison Krauss has recorded the song ‘Lay My Burden Down’ which was written by O’Donovan.
