About the Metropolitan Opera House
The Metropolitan Opera House, also commonly referred to as ‘The Met’, is the largest organization in North America which is devoted to classical music. It was originally founded in 1880 as an alternative to the old Academy of Music opera house in New York.
Presently, The Met is located on Broadway at Lincoln Square in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York City. It is part of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.
This building was designed by the architect Wallace K. Harrison and opened in September 1966 with the premier of Samuel Barber’s Antony and Cleopatra, starring Leontyne Price and Justino Díaz. According to The New York Times, the opening of this new opera house was “a crescendo of splendor,”
Each season at the Met, the stages are graced with over 200 different opera performances. People from around New York, the country, and the world come in droves to attend these performances. It is estimated that over 800,000 people attend the Met during a single season. Furthermore, due to its new media distribution initiatives and the use of state of the art technology, millions of individuals can experience the magic of the Met virtually!
