Anna has always been highly regarded in the press and in the industry at large. Recently, New York Times called her a talent unlike any other who has exalted the jazz and cabaret singing style, making it known for its subtle undertones rather than the flash and flair. She has performed all over the world, for people of high honor and stature. No one can forget her performance at the White House when she sang for former President Clinton. Neither can people forget the enigma that was her performance at Moscow for the "Youth Peace Summit" that the President Gorbachev so generously put together.
Other than being a popular live performer, Callaway has become known for her work in television as well, composing the scores and theme songs for many known dramas. She has also written both Broadway and off Broadway musicals. One such work that became an audience favorite was "Sibling Revelry", which she wrote with the help of her sister, Liz Callaway. She show won many awards and was known for its wit and smart humor. One aspect of her work that has highlighted her entire career is her devotion to the preservation of "The Great American Songbook". In order to aid this work, she produced television shows on the PBS network, both of which received a considerable amount of viewership. For "Singer’s Spotlight with Ann Hampton Callaway", she once again took the assistance of her sister, and Christine Ebersole, a dear friend. She endeavors to produce a long running television series, and has proven herself capable enough with the two specials.
More recently, the Callaway has signed a record deal with "Telarc International", a Grammy Award receiving company. Her latest work was released in 2009; a record entitled "At Last". The album received favorable reviews from nearly every critic—others had little negativity to pry on. With this record, she went back to basics, doing what she does best. Before the release of this album, Callaway had experimented with a more pop sound. Her previous album, "Slow" which she released under "Shanachie Entertainment" displayed her change in style. Other than her regular albums, Callaway has recorded holiday compilations as well. "This Christmas" was her first solo holiday album, while "Holiday Pops!" was a collaboration with "Peter Nero and the Philly Pops".
Callaway is not just simply a singer. She is a songstress, who has composed more than 250 songs for the commercial business to date. These include songs for Broadway show and other theatrical productions, and some for television shows as well. Moreover, other than Barbra Streisand, other famous singers have also used her compositions—Liza Minneli, Peter Nero, Carole King, Barbra Carrol and Patti LuPone amongst others. One of her most popular tracks was "At the Same Time", which reached the number one spot, earning the composer the first of her three platinum selling records. Streisand would also make Callaway compose songs on request. On one occasion, she requested her to write a tune for James Brolin’s wedding. The track was called "A Love Like Ours" and was included in Streisand’s later album.
Callaway is a capable performer who has received many honors during her time. She first received a nomination for a Tony Award when she appeared in "Swing!" and was honored in the "Best Featured Actress in a Musical" category. She later won the Theatre World Award in the category of "Outstanding Broadway Debut".
Her shows this season are going to include some of the greatest hits that have defined her career. Be it her work on stage or on television, people with Anna Hampton Callaway tickets are going to be able to hear them all being performed live by the living legend.
