Andrew Dice Clay is the undisputed king of comedy. When he gets on to stage to interact with his audience there is either absolute silence as nobody wants to miss his next joke or the entire room is ringing with laughter. Andrew Dice Clay was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Growing up in the big metropolitan area he was able to grasp a lot of important things which would later help him in his career as media personality and a comedian. From his early years in the busy city life he realized that people all around him were always in a hurry and a mad rush to get to some place, and that to get somebody’s attention and hold it for some time, you really had to say or do something that would catch their interest and not bore them with mundane and useless talk. Having got this very important lesson he put it to good use when he started performing as a standup comic.
With his very first joke or remark he would get the attention of the crowd and then keep them hooked to his every word till the performance was over. But none of this would have been made possible if not for the help, support and encouragement of his parents Fred Silverstein and Doris Silverstein who were both real estate sales agents. He got his skills of persuasion through them and as in his parents’ line of work, they dealt with new people every day, dinner was always a fun time at his house where they would talk about the interesting people they came across during the day. Andrew Dice Clay was able to do impressions and mimic different people and accents when he was only five years old. And this natural comedic talent became his thing during school and then later in college. Though in high school he also briefly dabbled with music and played drums.
After a successful audition at a local comedy club in the Brooklyn area by the name of Pips, he started performing there on regular basis. His act would usually involve him telling jokes to the audience and doing impressions of famous Hollywood celebrities and reenacting scenes from popular movies. He became famous for doing very accurate impressions of Jerry Lewis as The Nutty Professor and John Travolta in Grease. Soon he was being asked to perform at the more superior comedy clubs in the larger Manhattan area and was now regularly being seen at more posh places like Budd Friedman's The Improv, Dangerfield's and Catch a Rising Star. After having jump started his career in New York, the next logical thing to do for him was to move to Los Angeles and he went there in 1980.
In Los Angeles, Andrew Dice Clay started working with Mitzi Shore of the Comedy Store. These were good times for him as he started getting offers for roles on TV and to star in a lot of Hollywood films. He made appearances on popular sitcom M*A*S*H and also on Diff'rent Strokes. Between 1986 and 1988 he was a series regular on the NBC drama Crime Story. During the same time period he also appeared in many hit films like Pretty in Pink and Making the Grade where his character’s name was Dice, which he later adapted as his middle name for his career in standup comedy. His other acting credits include Wacko, Night Patrol, Private Resort, Amazon Women on the Moon, Casual Sex?, The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, Brainsmasher... A Love Story, No Contest, Bless This House, National Lampoon's Favorite Deadly Sins, Hitz, Foolish, My 5 Wives and One Night at McCool's. More recently he appeared in few episodes of Entourage.
Andrew Dice Clay is the only comedian in history to have had more sold out performances than any of his contemporaries. Back in 1990, when he came to Madison Square Garden the venue was completely sold out for two nights in a row, a feat which has not been accomplished by any other standup comic ever. His performance from the event was later released as a concert film under the title Dice Rules. He has gotten into trouble for his jokes and comments many times, but which comedian has not had to deal with such things. In 1989 MTV banned him for life for reciting Adult Nursery Rhymes at the Video Music Awards ceremony, a decision the network television had to revoke later because of immense pressure from the fans of the legendary comedian.
