Hailing from Maastricht, Netherlands Andre Rieu happens to be one of the most renowned violinists and conductors of our time. Rieu is also well known for composing the waltz along with Johann Strauss Orchestra. Rieu was born to a Christian family that was of French origin, and had a strong musical background. Since music was in his family for quite some time, it wasn’t odd to know that Rieu’s interest was strongly inclined towards music, which is why he started learning violin at his early age of five. And it was around that age when he was highly inspired by the orchestral music. So he started taking classes at the Conservatoire Royal in Liege and later he went on to learn violin from Conservatorium Maastricht. He had a privilege to study under the supervision of the teachers like Herman Krebbers and Jo Juda. Later on, Rieu also went on to attend Music Academy in Brussels where he became a pupil of renowned, Andre Gertler.   

Andre Rieu decided to go on to work in the waltz form, when he received an encouraging feedback from the audience after his performances of the Gold and Silver Waltz by Franz Lehar at the University. From there on Rieu decided to form his own orchestra and so he did by forming the Maastricht Salon Orchestra, and started playing violin along with the Limburg Symphony Orchestra. Afterwards Rieu formed his very own production company and the Johann Strauss Orchestra back in 1987. Ever since that, his performances are linked with the restoration of the Waltz form of music. Apart from music, Rieu also made a cameo appearance at an Australian Soap Opera titled Neighbors back in April 2009.

After Rieu formed it, Johann Strauss Orchestra started performing along with 12 members back in 1987. The orchestra started off with only 12 members and as of the moment, the count of the members has gone all the way up to around 50 musicians. The orchestra stands responsible for sparking some new interest in the form of waltz music once they toured Europe for the first time. The act of revival of the waltz music truly took place in Netherlands where the orchestra recorded its Second Waltz from the Jazz Suites by Shostakovich. These were the endeavors which gave Rieu the title of being the Waltz King. 

Andre Rieu along with his orchestra, have performed his act in various cities in North America, Europe and Japan. Their work in the genre of waltz music has been appraised by many, which is why they’ve also claimed several awards and honorariums. Some of these awards include two World Music Awards. As far as the commercial success, the orchestra has released quite a few recordings and all of them either received gold or platinum status, thanks to the high volumes of sales. Rieu performed solo for the first time back in 2007 in Australia where he played My Way and Waltzing Matilda in Ringwood suburb of Melbourne at the Eastland Shopping center. The following day, Rieu took his act to Warringah Mall Shopping complex at Sydney’s Arena Cove. Later in the year, Rieu returned to Australia once again, this time with his orchestra. During that world tour, Rieu performed 3 concerts along with his orchestra at the Telstra Dome in Melbourne. Apart from Melbourne, the orchestra also performed in other cities including Adelaide, Perth, Sydney and Brisbane. To date, the maximum number of audience members in front of whom Rieu has performed in 38,000. This was also in Melbourne, during his world tour.
